Being a newbie in this cold climate and all . . . can I get away with running 5W-20 in the FJR and what brand oil should I use?

Thanks for the input.

Don't know how cold you expect to drive in, but I've run 20w-50 or 20w-40 as low as minus 6 degrees celcius (around 20 Farenheit) without any problems.

Everything you ever wanted to know about oil, and other stuff too, is right here

You may have missed this part when you signed up.

Sorry Iggy...............I beat you to it.

It's Friday.................. :glare:

The owners manual only lists Yamalube of a certain viscosity regardless of temperature IIRC.

A better question would be what gear and farkles you need to ride in the winter. However, this could be researched with the search function (preferably Google with keywords plus site:fjrforum.com). I ride at 17 degrees but my commute is only 30 minutes so my gear may not work for someone who rides in the cold for hours at a time.

Correct.

The "W" in the 10W-40/20W-40 means that the oil has passed winter flow/pumpability tests.

The FJR's coolant thermostat will bring the engine (and oil) up to operating temperature -- tho, it may take a little longer....

:(

Ray, should be explain the benefits and charm of electric engine heaters?

Uh...Ricky, isn't your garage heated? Maybe you should look into a heater you can set near the bike.

DO NOT place a propane torch under the oil pan or a small propane burner under the bike. Un-good X 10!

Noobs moving into cold climates....what can you say? ;)

Oh just phuck me, this is so funny for sooo many reasons..

Good on Rickie, you got all except MM!
