How can an AE perform well in a 0-60, 0- anything test?

Doesn't it have to be idling in 1st gear at the start of a time trial? You can't rev the engine to 6K or so and dump the clutch?

A valid question I think. Yamaha may have shot itself in the foot by introducing the AE. If all the comparo tests use the AE as the FJR entrant then the FJR will most likely bring up the rear in these timing tests.

I don't think Yamaha shot itself in the foot. It's a sport-tourer! Linked ABS brakes, electric windshield, 642 lbs. People quickly add cruise control or throttle locks, It's a bagger.....

If you wanted to drag-race -- you may have purchased the wrong machine! ;)

I think yamaha hit the nail on the head as far a sport touring goes. And you have a choice -- YCCS or manual clutch.

Hold the brake while bringing up the throttle disengages the clutch. It works.

+1

I dono. Mine's pretty fast off the line. The first time the front wheel came up I was satisfied. It's certain that a clutch lever would be quicker, but the electric one works quit well.

It's clearly obvious you've never tried an AE. I suggest you try one before you start making "How can ..." questions.

I expect my 0-60 times are not what could be achieved with a manual, BUT with the very real advantage that I need absolutely no preperation or skill to do the bike's best 0-60 time whenever the mood takes me, or (much more importantly) if I'm about to be rear-ended.

Just open the throttle wide. The bike takes off like a scalded cat. Maybe not quite with the fire up its backside that a skilled rider with a manual clutch might achieve.

The only skill you need is to make sure the road surface is not going to let the tyre slip, and be able to reduce the throttle as the front starts to lift.

I have seen figures quoted; from (my rather poor) memory they were 3.7 seconds for the manual, 4.0 seconds for the AS (or AE). But, as I said, you can get that 4.0 seconds figure every time.

You do need skill for (say) a 0-100 test, because you have to change gear. The AS is slower changing gear, and its time varies according to rider skill. Personally, I couldn't care less, I'd rather be riding it than propping up a bar bragging about it.

I have no issues with acceleration with the AE. I know I can go faster off the line with the A model, but I ride the bike that hard about 4 times a month. I would not trade the ease of operation for the second or so gained at those few times. Besides after a couple thousand miles you know instinctly how to shift to avoid flare and you wont lose much. I came off a CBR954RR and this bike still impresses me with its acceleration and handling. I get alot more odd stares on this bike when then nose comes up taking off than I ever had with my CBR. I don't think yamaha shot themselves in the foot at all. Like was mentioned earlier by another post, it is a sport tourer, not a drag racer, but it still screws. This bike does take getting used to though. I took a short test ride, liked it, bought it, put 400 or so miles on it and wondered every day if I made a mistake. Now at 2500 miles I would not trade this AE for anything, I love it.

+1 The AE is great. Jumps off the line, nice and snappy! I loved mine right away but now with 800 miles on it and shifting skills improved, I would never give it up.
