Riding into work this morning, running about 75 and suddunly the ABS lite comes on, check Engine lite and gear indicator is flashing and speedo needle goes to zero. This is an AE and would not shift via either the hand or foot control. I was able to make it to the next little town and around the block (all in 5th gear) back to the parking area where I turned off the key and coasted a bit to a stop. I restarted it and was able to shift it to 1st ride over to it's parking space, get it into neutral and roll back to park. Tonight after work I restarted it and the ABS light is not on, but check engine still is. I am guessing this may be a ground spider issue. It is a 2006 with 25,000 miles with no prior issues. Dealer is picking it up tomorrow, I have an extended warranty, not the YES warranty.

Your thoughts o wise Forum?

When I'm in 5th and find myself slowing to a stop, I tend to pull a handle on the right grip...always solves my problems.

"Never trust overbuilt automatic control systems." Overheard from a world-class flight control engineer on his way to a Global Hawk crash investigation.

"What's a UAV program? It's a bunch of flight controls engineers standing around a smoking hole in the desert scratching their heads." Quoted from a front-line F-117 & F-22 flight test pilot.

OK...I'll put my soap box away now. Hope it's not too expensive to fix.

The spidy bites again. :angry2:

+1 on the spider, I would try to keep the starting/running to a minimum so that you don't totally cook the harness.

Dealer came and picked it up today...I am sure they have not looked at it quite yet. I will call them in the morning to get an update.

Called dealer they have not got completly into it but believe it is the ECM that has gone bad. Could be because my symtoms are not the same as others who have had issues with the ground spider.

Of course anything is possible, but assuming you did the ECU recall it would mean your ECU failed only after a couple of years? I don't remember seeing very many reports of ECU failures.

All recalls are up to date at this time. Hope to get this resolved quickly. Losing riding days.... :angry2:

Update: Dealer called. Mama Yama is telling the when it is multipule issues like I have it is a "dirty gang connection" aka ground spider. I told him where to look and mentioned that Yamaha was replacing part of the harness on the ext. warranty. He said they did not offer...but then he has not got it completly opened up and I am betting on a fried area where everyone esle has had issues. More to come I am sure....losing more riding days waiting. Dealer is backed up as you would think this time of year but working me in as quick as possible. :(

Just spoke to the Service Manger, they are checking every connection one by one. Nothing melted so far and they are under the tank now and still looking for the issue. I'll be lucky to get it back before the 4th at this rate. I know this guy and I am feeding him as much of the valuable info on this issue that this site offers, location of the issue etc. Not sure if they believes it but he has them working on it. He did admit that this was most likely going to turn into another ignition type recall. And the clock keeps ticking and I ain't ridin.... :dribble:

If as you say your spider is only at the beginning stage of "playing up" and has not actually melted a foot of surrounding wiring, then why not simply order the Brodie grounding loom and fix the problem permanently? It will be quick, and easy for the stealer to install since it plugs into the OEM spider sockets. I mention this because even a new harness will be subject to the exact same failure since the problem lies in the design, not a failed connector...

Picked up the bike last night. :yahoo: All is well for now. Only corrosion in the Ground Spider. Winter project will be a Brodie loom. Love this bike and want to keep, but the issues......
