Maybe this is old news.....

I know that Fram makes an oil filter with FJR 1300 application, but it is colored orange and black...which is not one of the stock FJR color schemes.

I went to Napa Auto Parts (in Oregon) because their Napa Gold series oil filters are highly rated. Their Napa Gold #1356 is an FJR application and is colored all black like the OEM oil filter. And it costs 7 bucks and change...half of what Yamaha OEM costs.

I'd like to think you're just clownin about the colors of an oil filter, but somehow, I think you're not. WOW.

Anydamnways.....I may be a freak. I may be a tard. I may be stoopid, and a lot of other dullard type words, but, I've always stuck to OE filters on all my bikes ESPECIALLY throughout the warranty period. A few bucks more for sure, but, I've found piece of mind that way.

FWIW, I buy them in serious bulk, and have found great values that way. I bought a 10 pack for the FJR for $100. Well worth it IMO.

YMMV.

The only OEM filter on my 97 Royal/97,000 miles and 05 Venture/20,000 have been the one that came on the bike. At the first oil change I jump to Walmart Supertech 6607 for 2 dollars a piece. pack of 10 = 20.00.

Nothing but Super tech on my bike since first oil change at mile 50. 12,000 miles and it still runs like day one. :cownoy:

Has anyone ever cut open a OEM or Fram oil filter to see how much filter material is in there? A lot of part store will have a display of different oil filters cut open to look at. I would not use a fram oil filter again after seeing inside. By the way NAPA oil filters are made by WIX filters  :)

I've cut open the OEM a couple of times when my bike was new. There were some visable specks of machining swarf in them that any filter would have caught. The OEM has a different media filter than most paper filters but I don't think filters are as important as one would be led to believe especially if the oil changes are done on a regular basis (either miles ridden or elapsed time). Fram's trashing has been greatly exagerated in my opinion and I use them in my cars almost exclusively; on the FJR, I have purchased, in bulk from University Motors, Yamaha OEM, as they have a very strong can and are purpose built for this bike.

That filter (or the Wix 51356) doesn't fit properly, but you can try it for yourself if you want, then maybe get some engine work done if you don't notice the oil spilling out while you ride.
