I was installing a front tire using a portable air tank and I discovered that the tank's air chuck would not let air flow into the wheel valve stem unless the stem's internal schrader valve was installed.
Does a chuck typically used in tire mounting not include a valve? Is the control valve located in the hose instead?
The tire beaded OK with the stem valve installed. But it obviously didn't get the rush of air one would get with the stem valve removed.
During the removal of the old tire I tried a simple technique that seemed to work quite well. I removed the top bead fairly quickly with a simple lever. While removing the remaining bead I tried something a bit different.
I opened a gap between the wheel and tire with a lever. I then pushed a short piece of 1/2" PVC pipe into the gap. I slowly rolled the tire off the rim with the pipe. The pipe grips the rubber and rolls along the bead, sliding on the rim as it moves along, easily pulling the tire away from the rim. The PVC pipe doesn't appear to mar the rim's finish as it slides around the circumference.
