People get pissed off because it is illegal, and you can be cited, for not wearing a seatbelt. Yet there are no laws pertaining to gear other than helmets? Part of the reason someone else gets to decide things about safety is because individuals don't always make the best choices. Agencies however, have professionals, who study in depth, "HOW TO MAKE THINGS SAFER" and make them requirements to do so legally.

I'm not a big advocate of big government, but to me it just makes plain sense that seatbelt's are REQUIRED to operate a car. Just like licenses are required to drive, or to operate heavy equipment, or to do just about anything in life!!!! I see no reason for the government not require riding gear for wearing motorcycles, and citing it just the same as they do for seatbelts.

I for one would have much rather had a f*ing ticket, than to look at Sara's knee because I didn't require her to wear protective pants.

MOTHGMOTT!

Most Of The Gear Most Of The Time.

I have ridden with no protective gear (swim trunks, sandals and sun glasses) and have gone down with no helmet and had no injures (the helmet on the side of the bike protected the bike! :p ).

I am 100% against helmet laws, seatbelt laws, airbag laws, and all Big Brother protecting you from yourself laws!

I live by "SEAT BELTS, putting bad drivers back on the road since the 50's"!

If I wanted to be 100% safe I wouldn't ride!

That said if there was no helmet law in Kalifornia I would still wear a helmet 99% of the time and I wear a protective jacket, denim pants (plan on getting a "Stitch" at some point in the not too distant future), gloves 100% of the time and boots.

Just my 2 cents.

Using the ATGATT logic, I guess it's time for the Gov't to legislate that Everyone must wear DOT certified protective gear for everything.

Pedestrians trip and fall and could strike their head on something, so Full Face Dot helmets should be mandatory.

Pedestrians commonly get bumped into by all sorts of motorized objects, So Full set of leathers with armour will save lives.

Most accidents happen around the home, So I guess we will have to bubble wrap everybody in the house.

Little Johnny is pretty rowdy, always getting banged up playing with something. Better tie him to a tree. Can't have that scrape or bruise getting infected and causing MY insurance rates to go up, No Way!!!!!!!

A lot of "Accidents" have happened in bed, Uh Oh...... Baby on the way....So I guess back to the Full Face DOT helmets and full Race Leather Armoured Suit's , Oh and possibly some seat belts , to keep you strapped to your side of the bed, Don't want you straying over that centreline, now do we...

Yup, it will be a Great Day when we get ATGATT legislation passed, Just think of the Lives saved and the Revenues the Gov't can collect from fines from any scofflaws who don't conform......Yup, It will be a Wonderful World...

Or Maybe, You wear what you feel comfortable with, and I will wear what I'm comfortable with, and lets Go Ride...

Some really good advice here and some precious ego's as well i.e don't speak for me etc... get over yourselves....sometimes as mature as we are we need to be told sometimes to wake up and smell the roses occasionally.

Interesting though a study was done here in Oz a few years back it it purported that if drivers wore helmets (designed for cage driving) it would virtually eliminate head injury deaths over night? Good idea? No, practical? No, Safe ...yes...

But maybe I like running around telling others what to do 'cuz I'm a do gooder and that means it's my mission to make sure no one gets hurt by their own actions :)

Actually, my definition of what appropriate gear is has changed since logging on here 3 years ago. I used to think when I got my 1977 CB550 that ATG was wearing leathers, helmet, jeans and boots. It's been a helpful education...but if Mr Gman said that it was mandatory...I might be a little resentful...cuz I hates other people requiring things of me. I'm a little rebel I guess...or an immature child...you pick...makes me no never mind.

GUYS / GALS - I am NOT in favor of governmental legislation for AGATT - Lord knows we have more than enough now. I want LESS government as it keeps infringing on everything we do - and now say.

I guess I am a "do gooder" telling others what to do - it's become an every day occurance - at work... because of OSHA and trying to protect complacent employees so they don't kill themselves. As far as after work - they can do whatever they want as you are free to do as well.

However, I will not apologize for being concerned... but will if you believe I've stepped on your toes... and enough big brother already..

Kevin Daly really nailed it - it's about the mentality; if you know the danger (and we all do) why would you not want to take advantage of every possible means to protect yourself and your family - that's the crux of it.

MOTHGMOTT! Sounds like what you would call chunks of a moth stuck to your leathers

Seriously though, Bearly Flying, you not even close to "Bearly Understanding" I dont think anyone on this thread or any ATGATT thread that I have read at this site has ever argued that ATGATT should be a law. Your scarcasm kind of misses the point, your defending a position that no one is arguing against.

I know the danger of bouncing my FJR off the rev limiter in 5th gear with the speedo reading close to 160 mph, but I still do it, And I also know the danger of throwing my leg over MY fjr EVERY time I go out and ride, but I still do it.

I did!!!

I do think it should be law.

Bearly Flying: You are entitle to your opinion and I am entitled to mine. So there is not going to be a true agreement on this one.

But.... There is no logical argument against not wearing ATGATT, only "I don't want to."

And there are tons of regulations to protect people, even if we don't like them. Remember speeding tickets??? To be an electrician, there are certain rules you must follow. Aww screw the rules, I'm not throwing breakers, I'm going to just start cutting wires with stuff still plugged in. Want to own a poisonous snake, you must have a license for handling. Remember you can get a ticket for freeking J-walking!!!

New York just outlawed trans fats.

Guess your pissed off about that one too??? Better go buy a barrel of trans fat and start drinking it with a straw. (Yum) :)

Why were all these laws put in place? Because it is a governments job to try to protect it's people because in general... People are stupid, and don't do what's in their best interest.

So make sure you call up your legislators and start bitching about seatbelt requirements, speeding laws, let truckers do meth so they can stay up, tell nascar to forget 5 point harnesses, your too much of a badass for all that.

Like I said, we can agree not to agree on this when it comes to regulation. But you cannot argue that walking down the street, or having sex, or sitting in your house carry the same risks as riding a motorcycle.

Ok then I stand corrected.

Back to scarchastic responses... 4 wheels are safer than two.... now we're ****** :|

one of my favorite lyrics "Those that know whats best for us must rize and save us from ourselves"

-Rush, Witch Hunt

be careful what you wish for...

Uhm, just to play "Devil's Advocate" :diablo: (Imagine MM2 doint that?):

Do you ATGATT/MOTGMOTT guys (Me, too), always follow every law and safety rule while enjoying riding your bikes? :ermm:

I didn't used to wear all the gear. The only thing that changed my mind was reading other people's experiences, witnessing what happens to people when they slide across pavement, gravel and plants without gear and then saw the same thing happen to a guy fully geared up. I never crashed when I was wearing jeans, tshirt, sneakers etc. I just looked, learned and made a decision to wear gear.
One argument I had was the heat. I found out that the mesh gear keeps you cooler than when you just have a t-shirt on...it blocks the sun. Maybe the dry Sacramento heat has something to do with that, but the bottom line is that the heat from the sun and the bike now have a layer of insulation keeping it out.

I'll ride with anyone and I don't think anyone is smarter or dumber one way or another. I don't want to leave my skin on pavement so I wear gear. I don't want a bug in my face so I wear full face helmets (one at a time). I like my life, so while I certainly take chances to experience joy, I have my limits and everyone gets to draw their own line.
+10

Still havn't graduated past Diamond Gusset or Draggin jeans yet. And no, I don't follow all the rules, all the time. I speed, lane split, don't always do a full stop at the sign or light. I am human. I take what I consider to be calculated risks, and ATGATT figures into that calculation.

Your right dude! Its the difference between idology and reality; we's all sinna's. But i tell you what... the "sermons on the fourm" have made me repent from the ways of the :diablo: a little bit more than I would normally. So :drinks: all around!
