You don't _need_ too, but... Getting at least a SS1K cert allows you to do a few other things if'n you want to have those certified later. So might as well send in the $35 bones and get a number.

Then down the road you'll have an official IBA number so you can do IBA related shiznit.

 
There is something about 18 to 24 hours of nothing but the bike and the road, a ride for the sake of riding even if it is all on superslab.

I don't care if it's 50 turns every mile or a long stretch of freeway, I just like riding.
