Well, because it is the AMA... They should rephrase that to say "The best place in the United States...."

Am sure there are riders in Europe that will disagree, and although I have not been there, just from the pictures I have seen I'd vote for the Italian mountain region... , good beer/great food , hot babes at nude beaches, and, the Alps......

You pussies that feel only spots that allow you to ride year long without buying warmer gear makes you win.

And as for America..

I'm paying 3 bucks a gallon for gas right now, how about you CA folks?

$3.699 a gallon for Chevron regular this afternoon for a loop down to Folsom up to Sutters Mill and back to Auburn. It sucked, like almost all California riding, BTW.

I've never done CA on a bike. I did do most of US-1 and several adjacent romps, in a rented Saab Turbo for a week. Man, would I ever hate to own THAT car! :)

Wanted to slam something down on this thread, go on and on about how great it is to be close to the Smokey Mountains. But you know, one of the best things about a motorcycle is the ability to turn almost any place you live into a great place.

I rest my "CA" case.

:)

And the Appalachians didn't win cause AMA is apparently just plain prejudiced against TREES!?
yeah and dear, Jim  but hey lets not attract any undue attention. I mean this is a dirty old coal burning hill billie mountian range. no cause to come callin

Well said Jeff. This must surely go into the forum archives as a sound statement of wisdom. It sounds like something that Orangevale FJR might have said.

Yeah, but making complete sense is no fun at all!

one thing Kalifornia has going for it -- they know how to re-pave a road without trying to straighten it first. :yahoo: :clapping:

I'll have to agree that of all the places I've lived, California is a great motorcycling place!

The Swiss alps on a Triumph 675 is pretty good. But even doing switchbacks every couple of clicks gets old after a day or two!

California has lots of variety not only in roads, but climate and geography too! Just on my commute alone, I leave home in a very Florida-like environment through the orange groves and vineyards at 300' elevation, climb to over 4000' in the Alpine-like Tehachapi mountains and descend into the high desert in Mojave at 2800'.

And then there's Highway-1 on the coast and the world famous Hwy-229 to Creston! Never a dull ride! Ever!
