I'm a AMA member and I have been for 24 years. I do not agree with the AMA on all issues. BUT I do agree with them on many. I'm thankful for the actions they take in the halls of congress and in court rooms across the US. I'm glad I'm a member when I read about the AMA taking action to keep public riding areas open, to defeat motorcycle bans on public roads, and to change laws that allow a cage drives that kills someone on the road the ability to get away with a $65 fine for failing to yield the right of way. I like to think they my membership gives them a little extra clout.
And speaking of my membership, for $39 bucks a year I get a 10% discount at bike bandit and at my local dealership. That more than covers the cost. On top of all that I **Should** have the AMA Tow service. Granted, I have never needed to place that call, and after this post I'm not sure they would be answer it. But, I'm not a member for the tow service. My insurance company also has a tow service that I already paying for anyway.

Yeah, the mag is thin and not very good.

Okay, they seem to be having a little leadership issue right now.

Sure, they have screwed up American road racing.

But still, when the Sierra Club ask congress to close massive chunks public riding land or some city decides to ban motorcycles from parks or the EPA tries to outlaw power commanders and mini-bikes, it's nice to have the AMA around.
The same reasons why I became a life member. They are the most influentual at keeping riding areas open. Good, bad or whatever, they still do the most to keep areas open and politicians honest on our behalf. On balance, they are way better than they were 5 years ago. Granted they have a ways to go yet.

I fully agree with AuburnFJR and Deacon51. Also wish the American Motorcyclist Association was better managed and more effective; but they're the one and only first line of defense against politicians!

Yeah, the AMA is the lobbying group for motorcyclists. That's the *only* reason I'm still a member. And recently, from looking at all the land closures, I'm not so sure they're still doing such a great job there.

+ another on Auburn and Deacon.

And in Dingman's defense, I like his big moves. Selling off Pro Racing and redirecting membership dues to government relations was the right thing to do. And he tossed the crooks.

Regarding the magazine, I'd also argue that "not very good" is a huge improvement over what it used to be, which I would have characterized as "not absorbent enough for toilet paper and useless for anything else."

Back to the OP, though: I haven't had to call MoTow yet, knock on wood, but I've definitely heard complaints from others. That's a program that apparently needs a lot of work.

Who knows how much they are being outspent by the environmagleist. But I am sure it is at least 10 to 1 and probably much higher than that.

Sierra Club claims 1,300,000 members. The AMA claims 300,000 members.

That's why every one that rides should be a member of the AMA. Because believe it or not, "they" do want to take our toys away. They want to automate driving, and that would be easier without all these idiots on motorcycles in the way. Asshats with straight pipes (or no pipe at all!) bliping the throttle every 15 seconds and taking off from stop signs have lead to several states/cities trying to pass laws requiring all motorcycles to have EPA stickers on exhausts systems, banning after market exhausts. Or in the case of this link... https://www.wmur.com/newsarchive/23521789/detail.html a rattle basket Duc.

Anyway, my point is the AMA isn't perfect. It's a bummer that AMA Mototow let the OP down. But the AMA needs all the members it can get. And we motorcyclist need the AMA more than ever.

A business, whether for profit or not for profit, must see to its customers/members needs or takes on the risk of loosing money/support. This over anything else should be as close perfection as possible imho.

Yeah, and it's 'way, 'WAY past time for them to get their **** together. They've been lackadaisical slackers (except for the DC lobbyists) for as long as I've been an AMA member, at least 20 years.

I don't think I've EVER seen a technical article in the magazine. It's a straight-to-trash garbage-in-garbage-out publication when it shows up. Why are they wasting the money to even print it?

Gotta disagree with that. I urge everyone to cancel their memberships and send a clear message to the AMA that they suck and we want change. When the morons are gone I will go back.

You know, you can vote in the AMA elections, voting is open to all members.

Yeabbut, what good does that do? I don't care who's running it, I just want them to run a less amateur operation. "Fix your ******* computer systems so you know who's paid for what" has little to do with who's running the place, other than "fire 'em all and start over" and I've never seen that do much good in any organization.

I haven't ever seen anyone running for AMA office anyway, or campaigning in any manner. Maybe it's hidden somewhere in the magazine, but I haven't seen it.

Edit: So I agree with Johnny80s and canceled my membership yesterday, and sent them a letter explaining why. (a paper one, by post, not a useless email that gets deleted in a heartbeat)

Of course, Yamaha totally didn't read my letter about the local dealership, so I'm sure this'll get ignored too.

Well, I'm still a HOG member, so if I break down on the road I'll just have the Feejer towed to the nearest Harley dealer and.....um....uh oh, let me think about this some.
