A bud was racing at the AMA sanctioned Funky Chicken race held today (Saturday) at the Big K Ranch on route 138 in Elkton. The Big K is @2500 acre ranch for the leisure pursuits (fishing, hiking, horseback, riding, etc.) of the richer than me. It was hosted by the Emerald Trail Riders Assoc. (EMTRA) based in Eugene. 300-500 riders were expected and I think it was on the low end of that number (but just a guess). Good turnout with rain threatening.
They hosted the AMA dirt-bike trials racing and I took the family. My son and daughter weren't sure they wanted to go. The course was twelve miles up and down hills, over logs, through woods, etc. The race officials were very good. Pit row was small but fun. Lots of families and just great fun watching different classes from open expert to 12-year-old girl novices on 80cc bikes doing their best. The course was dusty and the skies clowdy, but as one racer mentioned, it was better than mud.
We tailgated a picnic, and I threw in a $10 ticket for a KTM 200; the benefits going to a Eugene rider with cancer.
By the end of the race my son and daughter wanted me to find a bike for them to ride and Mike wants to race someday. I call that a success. They were asking if we could go to the race next year, and explained the Funky Chicken rotated locations, so I had to promise to take them to another race sooner. Good times.
Sorry no pictures, but I couldn't find my camera and my son's pictures somehow got wiped out. But hopefully the website will get some pics and video posted soon. You can see the Big K Funky chicken held in 2005 and 2006 pics and video clips on the website here:
