Just finished reading American Road: The Story of an Epic Transcontinental Journey at the Dawn of the Motor Age. Essentially a history book on the development of the Lincoln Highway(the first transcontinental highway), the tale is told by recounting the trip of an army convoy that was assembled to promote the building of roads in America.

According to the book this history used to be taught in the schools, but I had never heard of it. I found the story well-written with well placed anecdotes (apparently California was the first state to issue a speeding traffic by airplane, it happened near LA), although occasionally side notes were initially hard to recognize as such. It was also interesting to read how the road movement in the US was initially funded and pushed by privateers, and how much excitement was generated by the road movement. Today we send people into space with way less fanfare than people got for crossing the country a hundred years ago.

Don't want to give the whole thing away, so I will conclude that for the low prices used copies can be had for its a great read for those interested in history and mechanized travel.
