A Tulare County Sheriff's Department deputy was killed Saturday afternoon in an off-duty traffic collision near Lake Isabella in Kern County.

Deputy Timothy Morin, 28, was riding a motorcycle with another man west on Highway 178 about 3 p.m. Saturday east of the Live Oak campground in Kern County when a westbound 2007 Dodge driven by 24-year-old Jeremy M. Austerman approached a curve in the road.

Austerman, of Bakersfield, allowed his vehicle to drift over the double-yellow line into the eastbound lane, striking Morin's motorcycle head-on, according to the California Highway Patrol. Morin was knocked off the motorcycle and flown to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, where he died a few hours later.

The other man with Morin, 27-year-old Lemon Cove resident Matthew Marcus Morin, was able to lay down his motorcycle and escape with minor injuries before Austerman's vehicle struck it, according to the CHP. He refused medical treatment. CHP could not say whether the two men were related.

Deputy Morin was assigned to the sheriff's department's patrol division and was working out of the Pixley substation. He also worked as a Woodlake police officer earlier in his career, according to the sheriff's department.
