Went for a very laid back ride, through the Santa Monica Mountains on sunday, with a friend riding an older Harley. Stopped at the "Rock Store" and saw Jay Leno with his jet bike. Continued on to the beach and had some fish&chips at "Neptunes Net". Made it almost back to my house ( within two miles ) and planned to stop for coffee and part ways with my buddy.... waited for the light to turn green... was crossing the intersection...when ... from beyond the four lanes of cars stopped at their light... a huge black cage blows the red light and ... it's wierd how fast it can happen. I bounced off and get to tell the story. Front tupperware, tank and left side of the bike seem to have suffered the most. Dropped it off at the motorcycle hospital today and get to learn about how these things get settled. Thankful for insurance, especially hers. More than 18 years without a misshap. Oh... I'm fine so far, just sore and shook-up. Am so very grateful for sage advise from other riders about wearing gear (never used to) and riding at 6% to 8%. Just seconds-and-inches sometimes. Anyways... got a ride planned for the Pacific Northwest, can't wait to get my baby blue back!

Glad to hear you are OK. Bikes are replaceable. Wonder if she was "stepping" on the brake pedal and actually was pushing the gas? Seems to be an elderly problem (my grandmother did it once befoer she gave up her license at 88.)

Neither of us were going very fast. I had just left the light, and to tell you the truth, she seemed truly supprised to be out in the intersection. I think I had about six feet of road to react and all I could do was lock it up. Twice that space, and maybe I could have stopped or at least avoided damage. When the bike went over, my ankle was definetly saved by my ICON boots. I was also wearing a Scorpion leather riding jacket and Icon gloves and full face helmet. My missing link was protection for my hip, so it will be more than jeans from now on! I still can't believe what it did to the bike. Between the impact with the cage and settling to the ground, and now a brief gilmpse as to the price of all the parts involved..wow!

Shout 'Alright at ya!

Glad you are okay.

I agree, sharing stories through the board really makes us wiser when it comes to ATGATT. Glad you heeded their advice.

Disappointed though. Where's the photo of the Leno and his rocket bike?

Sorry about the crash. It hurts even with full gear, but it hurts much less.

If you think parts for our bikes are spendy, price out skin grafts. People parts cost much, much more.

Glad you are okay. If you haven't already, get a lawyer. Even if you don't plan on suing her you may need it when dealing with the insurance companies.

+1 on the lawyer. Also, I used to ride in jeans with all the rest of the gear. After reading about some of the incidents others have had here I put the riding pants on all the time now too. Even for the 14 miles to work each day. Glad to hear that you survived relatively unscathed.

Holy carp! Glad you're OK.

Last May, Mrs. BG was taking the Rider's Edge training course. She was wearing jeans, Harley riding boots, Coretech mesh jacket, and a full-face helmet. She had a very-low-speed get-off in the dirt.

Her jeans ripped open at the knee like a knife through soft butter on a warm day. She will have a scar on her knee for the rest of her life. Her knee got infected, and she wound up with a big toe broken in 4 places.

The next day I went out and bought my first pair of armored riding pants. Up to that point I'd always just worn jeans.

Ouch! I feel your pain..physical & emotional. Glad you're OK. Just taught me a lesson though. I commute to work, abt 36 miles round trip. Everyday 'cept Fri I am well armoured. Friday I used to do the jeans thing, being casual day & all. No more! The Fieldshear one piece suit will just have to stay on, along with the BMW boots & A'Star gloves!! Thks for the wake up call!! Hope the Bike doctor gets yr 'baby' fixed in time for yr trip

Thanks for the good words and support. I feel kinda wussy, as there have been some riders seriously hurt lately. I know I was lucky. I still can't get my head right, but I'm sure it'll help to get back out and ride. Might have to even borrow a bike if it takes too long!

Damn! You were lucky to have gotten away with as little injury as you did.

Were you searching for red-light runners as you entered the intersection? If so, was there anything else you think you could have done (or could do differently in the future) to avoid a collision? Inquiring minds want to know!
