While on a typical Sunday joyride yesterday I had the opportunity to part company with my bike in some gravel on the back side of a rise just off the top. It happened so fast my only reaction as the bike slammed over was...WTF!

After sliding and bouncing along the pavement the end result was:

Pants - Left knee and left hip scraped down to the armor

Jacket - Both elbows and left shoulder scraped down to the armor

Gloves - Road rash everywhere

Helmet - Road rash on face shield and top

Boots - Both fronts scraped down to the core

This was my 1st serious up close and personal with the pavement. I pulled muscles in my back, groin and left wrist which hurts like hell but I'm not at the hospital getting skin grafts - barely suffered a scratch. Except for the helmet the gear was all Tour Master though I imagine any decent brand will do. Sure am glad I was wearing the full kit...

Frame sliders help...up to a point. The other side's similar minus a few sticky-out parts.

This was lurking on the blind side.

Glad you made it out in the condition that you did! If you have a chance post up some pic's of your gear.

Glad you are OK. Every time I think about not going ATGATT, I read a thread like this and once again am glad I choose to gear up.

That's actually not a slider, just a tip-over guard. Helps if you drop it off the sidestand while parking, but not much else.

I feel your pain! I did similar last month, and I do remember being VERY surprised by how quick it went from turning to sliding. I bruised my hip and sprained my ankle, bike seems to have tried to crush it. I can still wear my old boots, but the new ones Progressive bought won't go on my foot, too stiff, can't roll my ankle to get in. (The right one fits fine!) Can't wear them to break them in, can't break them in until I can wear them. A conundrum.

Slider almost saved the fairing, stator cover still got scraped, not as bad as yours. Thought about keeping it, but since it was covered, got the new one. Marks on the fairing are rain marks, not road rash. Fairing damage was only on the very bottom.

Upper fairing didn't fare so well, and the side bag was rashed big time.

I was only going about 15, just coming out of a tight turn, still into the clutch, even. Then BAM. I didn't slide, but the bike did, about 15 or 20 feet to the armco. Small marks on my jacket (elbow and shoulder), and my rain suit (still on from hours earlier in the day) was toast. Boots thoroughly scuffed.

The bike took more visible damage than my gear (except the helmet, boots, and rain gear) but I hit the road HARD!!! Big bruise on my left hip and thigh, small bruise on my arm (right behind the armor - thanks, Cortech!!!!) and trashed helmet.

ATGATT rules!! Was sore, not smooth on the shifter, but rode home from the scene after a good rest, and rode another four or five hundred miles by the time I got home that weekend.

Because I just hit and stopped, no surfing, my gear was fine. Cortech, made by Tour Master. I had Progressive replace the boots since they were scuffed so bad, and a pretty nice cut across the top of the left one. Hate to think about my foot under that with sneakers!

Thanks for the encouraging words! The irony and important point for ATGATT is that the accident occurred between balls-to-the-wall technical sections. I was loafing along at 50mph when the gravel got me. A blind spot hazard and can bring down anybody - you don't have to be wild and crazy.

+1

there's a big difference between the 2. notice the mounting locations and note that a slider will have a more substantial bolt that is tough (not hard) and mount to a part of the frame and not to the fairing sub-frame.

Glad you are O K smart thinking when using atgatt
Just curious, what did yo do with your old helmet, tossit or re-using it?
The helmet gets tossed. It's my understanding they're good for one collision with pavement or other immovable object. All of the gear did the job and is retired. None of it was very expensive so not that bad to replace. The jacket was a $69, '06 model closout purchase. I'll get over it.

Glad you are up, about and able to tell us. Soreness last about 7-10 days and then smaller places nag when moved in a certain way for a while longer.

Here's the jacket left shoulder and elbow. Considering the impact and pavement surfing I thought the outer shell held up OK. Sort of looks like it's been chewed on by a dog. The Tour Master tag is made of thick rubber. Kind of cool where some of the letters are scraped off.

Sorry to hear about the get off but glad you are okay. I learn something from each of these unfortunate incidents so I really appreciate you sharing. I hope you are able to get back on the road soon.
