The Whitewater - Baldy Fire is now burning out of control in New Mexico, the Gladiator and Sunflower wildfires are still not contained here in Arizona! From AZ Beemers President Brian Boles:

Wow, this is depressing -

https://www.inciweb.org/incident/map/2870/1/

It's a map of the fire with the proposed fire lines drawn in.   They plan on letting the Catwalk burn and other than surrounding and protecting Mogollon, they plan to let the fire burn down to US-180.

On the east side, the Gila Cliff Dwellings are inside of the fire lines.

This is what years of bad fire management and little rain cause. NOW they talk about using controlled burns to reduce fuel...Too little way too late!

+1, Gunny; HotRodZilla is so damn right on with his statement, our Forest Service Fire Management program is so damn ****** up it is unbelievable! Right now this fire is so horribly bad, that Mexico has sent up thirty of their hotshot fire fighting team named "Los Diablos" to help out!

"Los Diablos is a crew of more than 30 Mexican national firefighters, from Boquillas and other villages across the Rio Grande from Big Bend National Park, along with National Park Service firefighting personnel. A cooperative effort between the National Park Service, the Department of Homeland Security, the Border Patrol and Mexico, Los Diablos has provide emergency fire services at Big Bend National Park and throughout the United States since 1990. Their name, Los Diablos, which is Spanish for “the Devils,” comes from their promise to work like devils when they are called upon.

“We are grateful to the Pecos Zone III Incident Management Team, an interagency team, and all of the crews, engines and support staff for their hard work and professionalism in suppressing the El Capitan Fire. They were a great example of cooperation and coordination between agencies. Their actions Pecos Zone Type III Interagency Incident Management Team prevented the fire from spreading around El Capitan into Guadalupe Pass and Pine Springs, preventing damage to the Pine Springs Visitor Center and Campground, the park housing area and Texas Department of Transportation housing area and other structures” said Dennis A. Vásquez, Guadalupe Mountains National Park Superintendent. “All of the crews that worked on this fire worked under very rough conditions with very steep, rugged terrain, high heat, dryness and wind, along with desert flora – yuccas, sotols and a variety of cacti – all around. Because of their experience, training and professionalism, there were no accidents or injuries to personnel working on the fire or to visitors throughout the entire fire.”

“We are pleased to transition management of the El Capitan Fire back to National Park Service, as a Type IV incident, under the capable command of Incident Commander Christie La Paz, as well as for having a successful outcome” added Jay Northcott, Pecos Zone Type III Team Incident Commander. “All of the crews were superb in the professionalism and the safe manner in which they worked under difficult conditions. The park staffs at Guadalupe Mountains National Park were wonderful in the support and cooperation they gave the team and all of the personnel on the fire.”

Its currently the biggest fire NM has ever seen. Last year's Las Conchas fire held the record for less than a year, and has been dwarfed by this fire.

2 record fires in 2 years. That should raise some red flags.

I'd certainly like to think so AJ, but knowing our United States Forest Service and how damn incompetent they are I'm not holding my breath for changes!

I'm not so sure it's so much the Forest Service or the Sierra Club and their likes and other "environmentalist" who seem to think they know more than Mother Nature..... Unfortunately because of the miss management, the forest are going to burn.... 'cause there is so much undergrowth the fires burn so hot, they take out the big stuff burns with the undergrowth.....

Oh I forgot, what do they care, there are no forests in/near the big cities....

Sorry for the rant!

And again we are in the path of this fire.

Have been lucky the past four and have dodged the bullet.

Hope it will be the same this time.

It just keeps getting worse with wildfires breaking out here in the American Southwest! https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/10/western-wildfire-_n_1584074.html

Yesterday a new fire started west of Fort Collins Colorado. This fire has grown to over 10000 acres by early this morning. This fire has consumed many miles of excelent riding roads on and off road. We need to pray for all those who have lost homes and the people who are missing.

I suppose Mother Nature has decided it hasn't been warm enough in NM. :dntknw:

It's not poor management by the NFS, it's global warming!

I agree with your rant.

My uncle used to run the Sierra National forest in the 1980's before he retired he talked about how the forest policy changes that were being implimented due to the environmental lobby in DC was going to have some big reprocusions years down the road. Basically, DC was telling the forest managers how to manage the forests. His fear was out of control large wildfires. These new policies all but stopped logging and controlled burns that got rid of the underbrush and diseased trees while leaving the healthy trees to mature. It does seem over the last 10 years or so his fears are happening, we have seen many fires that are very large and many times record fires.

There are many forests out west here that are being ravaged by beetles that are killing trees. These trees will eventually have a fire go through that will be very large when it happens. He believes it is another by product of the bad policy from the 1980's that is still being used today.

They need to get back to letting the forest service do what they do best, manage the forests using science not DC policies forced upon them.
