Any CCT sound bytes?

I bought an 03 a little over a month ago that is making some mild ticking type noises, at idle and at 2700RPM, sometimes more sometimes less.

Here is the thing though, it is WAY quieter than the soundbytes i have listened to on here. I can usually only hear it when warming up with the helmet off or when my shield is up and i am listening. I have a guy that has done work on older bikes of mine that used to be a honda/yamaha mechanic that i trust. Would a generic bike mechanic be able to spot a bad CCT on the FJR?

Maybe it's normal valve noise too, i have never heard another FJR. Anyone around west Michigan that wants to take a listen? Lunch is on me.

Ticking noise usually comes from the left side (as your sitting on it) from the cylinder head.

CCT noise only come from the right side of the bike down lower...right around knee level, again as if you are sitting on the bike.

And IIRC if its a ticker i can ride until it smokes, but if its a CCT get er done immediately right?

Yep. Ignore a "tick" til oil comes shooting out the mufflers. Ignore a cam chain noise at your (wallet's) peril.

When yout CCT goes out and your cam chain starts slapping, you WILL hear it, and you WILL know something definatly isn't right with the world. I've had the CCT slip on the XS, and it makes a helluva racket. If it's a mild noise, it's not likely to be a CCT. My FJR ticks a bit as a standard thing, it's not a CCT or a ticker, it's just normal valve train noise.

Ray, did you mean "I've had the CCT slap on the XS" 'cause if you meant "I've had the CCT slip on the XS" the sound you'd hear is the sound of aluminum impacting steel. NOT a happy sound.

Well i took a listen this morning cold (when it usually makes the noise), i cannot tell if it is right side or left. Seems like it might be a little right. I have the service manual. Is it hard to diagnose a bad CCT? What should i look for while it's apart and do i need gaskets etc?

My advice is: Don't mess with it. That's right, put down the stethoscope, doctor, and back away from the bike!!

Playing with the CCT is the best way to cause it to screw up and you'll be buying a new head.

They all make a few mild ticking noises. There are valves in there with no hydraulic lifters. There are injectors in there, which have little solenoids to open and close them, that click open and closed at the engine rpm.

Thanks, I overreact to every little thing that is wrong with a bike. Still if anyone is around West Michigan that wants to take a listen, I would be game for a ride.

Mine is a much lighter tick, in a higher pitch. Let me see if i can get a vid of mine, but based on that video, i do not think that the CCT is the problem. Could be normal valve noise. the bike is a 2003 so it's older, but it has less that 10k on it.

Actually I did mean slip. When I reinstalled the CCT after a valve adjustment, I didn't tighten the retaining bolt enough. That allowed the CCT to slip back over the course of about 20 miles, and allowed the chain to start slapping :blink:
