Any emergent problems with the gen III?

Evolving instead of redesigning a bike:

Pro's: WE FIXED ALL THE SHIT WE NOW KNOW COULD OR DID GO WRONG.

Con's: Boo Hoo, it's not NEW enough. It's too much like the old one....

I like Yamaha's decision on this one. Man that GEN I must have been seriously cutting edge in 2001--

However, I have no plans to trade up my beloved my middle-child syndrome GEN II.

Take a look at your throttle free play. I adjust mine to absolute minimum and have no problems with this (2014 "A").

Six months and 13,000 miles, just two minor items on my 2014. My Yamaha labels have come unglued from my right bag trim two different times. Bit of jerky on and off throttle at very low speed. I think it's the nature of the throttle by wire and not too big a deal. Other than that, perfect

Thanks, I always adjust my throttle cable so it's immediate like you describe. Still have the slight hesitation, nothing really serious, I just like things exact.

20,000 miles on my '13 and couldn't be happier! I had a front-end clunk, but a re-torque took care of that. Just a few farkles, Garmin, TPMS, tank and tail bag, and 2 decals to make mine. On my 3rd set of tires. Stock seat.

When I first decided to get this bike, I had dreams of how wonderful it would be. It has exceeded my high, fantasy based expectations.

only problem I've had in 17 months and 32K miles is that the YAMAHA logos on the chrome rail on both side bags have come unglued. Dealer sent me replacement both times.
Was your dealer able to get you just the emblem or was it the entire chrome strip? Same happened to me and my dealer wants $59 for the replacement. Um, no thanks. Apparently NOT covered by YES.

Interesting...these are bolted on the 2014's

They replaced the entire chrome strip...they don't supply just the emblem. Simple 2 bolt design. I have the YES warranty.

My dealer wasn't real interested in trying to replace it other than me paying for the part. They certainly weren't willing to advocate for me to Yamaha. I called Yamaha directly and after much discussion Yamaha is replacing it for no charge. However, I was told explicitly it is not a part covered under YES and this was a "one-time, goodwill gesture." I told the rep that since this is apparently happening to other owners, Yamaha might consider making just the emblem available at a fair cost.

Do I understand the Yamaha emblem is coming off the strip on the side bags but not the chrome strip on which the name is attached? Apparently the adhesive is poor quality. Perhaps it would be wise for all GenIII owners to remove these labels and use a high quality double stick adhesive or something like E6000 adhesive to re-secure them.

I don't have enough miles on mine to add anything here yet, but it's nice to see everyone's comments on the small issues that have come up so far. I'm busier farkling mine than I am riding it. Be glad when the Phx summer heat is over so I can start laying down more miles.

that's right, the adhesive is sub standard. The strip itself is held on by 2 bolts. If mine come off again and I am able top find them, I'll use my own adhesive...if the emblem is lost, I'll demand they replace it under YES warranty.

Oh, so it is just the Yamaha name that falls off? I think that is glued on too on the '14. No problems though after almost 12k miles. Good luck!

Yep, exactly.

Service guy at dealer said to take a heat gun to all of the emblems and get them warm then use a towel and press on them to redistribute the glue. "If it wasn't completely clean at the factory, they aren't going to stick properly," he said. Sigh.

To be sure, I won't go through all that bullshit again for little emblem. Although if someone had the wherewithal to make decals that look the same, that person would probably have some customers.

If it were me and Yamaha refused to take care of the problem, I'd tell them I found a nice "Kawasaki" emblem that fits just fine in the same spot at a 1/3 the cost of theirs.

Good luck. Both my dealer and Yamaha USA said these are NOT covered by YES.

I have heard reports of wrinkles forming around the riders eyes. Also reports of cramping of the Zygomaticus major and minor muscles. Something having to do with smiling all of the freakin' time.

Some items on the bike make these issues present at a more rapid rate. Those would be the cruise control, flipping between sport and touring modes and on the ES model, frequent adjustment of the suspension - this will likely make them all go blind as well as all un-necessary fiddling does.

There does seem to be one item that counter acts these effects. Some of them have a payment book and that temporarily stops the smiling. It is however a brief reprieve.

Carry on.

Both of mine came off after a year...it was covered under the YES warranty. My dealer is G.N. Gonzales Honda/Yamaha out of Baton Rouge, La.
