I'm currently trying to work an assignment to Honolulu for next spring. It seems like the best option for the family staying together and I'm really not interested in deploying to the sand again. Just wondering if any members are that far West (Beeroux, FJR in Paradise?) I saw the 153 MPH run on the R-1 down H-3 = was actualy a decent clip to see some of the scenery (crazy). Anyone have any guidance on riding conditions or recomendations, tips or anything else?

You lucky guy. How about if you move to Oregon, ride my FJR and I'll go to Hawaii?

Hawaii is a great motorcycling state. Trouble is, after about a week or so, you've traveled all of the roads. Lots of sport bikes and Harleys, but not too many touring rigs because there's nowhere to ride to.

A good dual purpose or adventure bike is probably better suited to seeing more area.

Generally windy and wet on the windward (east) sides of the islands, dry on the western sides. Near Volcanos NP you can literally drive thru the foggy rain forest and transition to dry, sunny, lava encrusted desert in a distance of several hundred feet!

My family and I spent five years living in the Marshall Islands and Hawaii became our second home. Got pretty familiar with Oahu and also spent one vacation visiting the Big Island, Maui and Kauai.

Go for it! The Aloha spirit is alive and well. Just remember that you're a Haole (foreign to Hawaii) and not a local, and you'll do okay.

AWESOME state....what struck me first though was the vast amount of poverty, at least compared to mainland life. If you are not millitary, expect a big downgrade in living conditions unless you have a large boost in income. It's pretty much like any tropical, tourist supported island nation in that regard.

I still want to move there ASAP though! In the meantime I'll have to settle for a trip every year or so :(

Well if it wasn't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all. Got an email from my branch manager saying I can't get the Hawaii assignment cause they already have me slated for Iraq, by way of Ft. Riley, KS. F*ck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why did they even get my hopes up! I tried a month ago to get orders to Iraq and they told me NO. All I was tryin to do was get any orders NOW so I didn't have to wait till the last minute and scramble to get family affairs in order. Now they want to play games.

I've always said, if you can handle all the BS then the military is for you.

I can handle the BS except for when it deals with my family. That just irritates the hell out of me.

So it looks like the FJR will be going up for sale shortly. No point in keeping it if I can't even see it, le alone RIDE it. Might have to look into getting an 09 FJR when I get back. Early retirement gift to myself!

I'm sorry to hear that. Thank you so much for your service to the country. God bless you and keep you safe.

First Hawai, now Iraq? That really does suck! 10 years in the military was enough for me.

Good idea on the sale. Get a new FJR when you get back! Good luck & be careful!

Bummer dude. Iraq isn't much of an alternate to Hawaii!

But hey PAFJR1300, I just want to say thanks to you and your family, for serving our country!! Wherever that may be.

Visit Hawaii on a vacation rather than a duty station. There is a Military only resort facility that you should look into.

That really sucks - Iraq instead of Hawaii, plus being messed around too.

I believe that there is a forum policy, in the small print somewhere, that servicemen returning home from Iraq are entitled to not only the thanks of a grateful nation, but an '09 FJR too. Just think - you might be the first one here with the fire-truck-red bike.

Take care, and come home safe after your tour.

Good advice from Andre.

Lorie and I were there from 83-86; stationed at MCAS Kaneohe Bay. Don't know how the Marine Corps outsmarted the Navy, but we traded Barbers Point for KBay after WWII. Wonderful place and definately the "right" side of the island. That said, we were there about 30 months and I was ready to leave (and since Lorie was 8 months pregnant she was too!). Even though I spent about 12 months deployed to various places, Hawaii lost its appeal after a while - I think it was the "sameness" every day. No seasons..... I didn't have a bike back then, but if I did I think I would have gone nuts!! As someone else here said, after one or two day trips, you're done! I would second the suggestion for a dual-sport bike. Maybe you can run around the Kahokoos (sp?) - just be careful you don't run across any "secret "Mary Juana" plots - no joke.

If you can, take trips to the other islands. Molokai is good. Hawaii is ok - used to deploy to the Pahokola Trng Area; 6k ft altitude and beautifully situated between the 2 mountains. Kilawea (sp) is just over the hill and makes a beautiful scene when it erupts! And finally, Kauai is a beautiful place. Oh yeah, Hawaii is where I got my diving license and it's a great place to dive! You can see for miles and the water is relatively warm. On the side of Diamond Head there used to me (may be closed) an Army club - The Cannon Club - that had great Sunday brunches and great views. You can also get cottages at KBay that are on the bay, great places and you really should look into them. Bellows AFB also has cottages, etc that are right on the beach. Magnum PI used to film down there quite a bit.me)

And always remember, the Geckos (no, not from Geico) that are crawling on your walls are in fact your friend (they eat the roaches and other critters fond of warm, humid climates. This is bringing back wonderful memories! Hawaii is where Lorie used to put almost everything we owned into plastic bags - especially food - good tip to remember! Your side of the island might be more civilized, but I wouldn't count on it.

All in all I'd have to say I did enjoy Hawaii for the time I was there. I was with my beautiful wife, young son, manufactured my future daughter, beautiful weather (except that one New Year's day we had to put on sweatshirts; what a horrible day!).

The roads from the windward to the leeward (Honolulu) are as I understand it, much better than they were in my day (Likelike and Pali Hgwy) - might be feasible for you to live on the windward side - in my humble opinion the better side to live.

All that said, good luck and enjoy the time with your family!

As a p.s., you guys think that Hawaii is small for riding bikes? I was stationed on Guam for 18 months back in 1965. I bought my first 'motorcycle' while there. Guam is very beautiful, although I think a bit more tropical than Hawaii with varied landscape - even has a small mountain. After 18 months I covered every square inch of road, even some old WWII paths in the jungles.

It was a small 2 stroke Yamaha, but on Guam, that's about all one needs to have fun.

Oahu and Guam are huge compared to Kwajalein where we only had bicycles for transportation! The island is 3 miles long x 1/2 mile wide (and half of that is the airport).

my niece is stationed there in KS, and if i'm not mistaken she is one of the ones who decides who goes where.

So, did anyone from Hawaii speak up?

I might be going to the Big Island for a week next month. I am interested in renting someones FJR for half a day or so. PM if you would not mind renting your bike to a MSF RiderCoach for half a day. Thanks,

I couldn't find any FJR riders on the big island. The ONLY bikes I could find to rent on the big Island were at the Harley dealer, though I was on the Hilo side, not the Kona side.

Where are you going to be staying? I have some GREAT recommendations for things to see on the east side of the island. Our friends that live there gave us the local tour, and there's some stuff I never would have seen as a normal tourist.

I rented a BMW F650GS from Big Kahuna rentals in Honolulu when we were there this spring. He also had a R1150R, but was already rented when I checked on it. It was a great day trip, circled most of the island, had to turn around just before the north shore area due to rock slide. Check the net, I believe there was another H-D dealer that also rented Beemer's and Kawi's.

-edit: btw, I was on Ohau, not the big island.
