I'm in the process of having a banner made to fly over our Main Street for Veterans Day and for Jordans Memorial dedication. On the back of the banner are going to be the seals of all 5 branches of the military 33" x 33" each. I was just about to have them finish the banner when a vet said to me, "just make sure you have them in the right order". By the time I figured out what he was talking about he was already gone. SO, does anybody know if their is a protocol for how the seals are displayed so I can get this thing finished? ARMY, NAVY, AIR FORCE, MARINES, COAST GUARD?

This is usually done by placing the oldest branch of service first with the next oldest in the second position and on down the line.

1st US Army (June 1775)

2nd US Navy (October 1775)

3rd US Marine Corps (November 1775)

4th US Coast Guard (1790)

5th US Air Force (1947).

Search : display Military seals

I think he was just screwin' with ya-each member/former member feels his branch should be first, the only thing they all agree on is that Air Force should be last......... :p

I have heard of an order protocol before but I don't know if it's true.

I found this protocol for flag displays (under letter "e" and near the top of the outline) but I don't know if it necessarily applies to seals. I don't see why it wouldn't.

(Disclaimer: I'm not an expert on this but was intrigued by the question and ready to help.)

Looks like I may have opened a can of worms here. I'm sure that once the banner is up someone will say that they are incorrectly placed. The banner guy certainly wouldn't know.....instead of writing "First Battalion Ninth Marines" on the proof he put "First Battalion Ninth Mariners" . They apparently don't have Marines in Ecuador.

Axeman,

When displayed in Joint formation, the order of precedence is Army, MARINES, Navy..then the other guys. After WWII the SecDef directed the above when in joint formations. Many, many, many arguments over this, but check out a picture of a joint formation at the Pentagon - Army, Marines, Navy..then the other guys.

Semper fi,

Jim

EDIT - Wolfhound is correct on the establishment dates, but....I forget the DoD or OSD order that applies, but in my career I've had to look it up a few times...you would think I'd remember it wouldn't you!!

Yet another edit -- here you go:

When different services are in formation, the following order of precedence should be followed:

Cadets, United States Military Academy

Midshipmen, United States Naval Academy

Cadets, United States Air Force Academy

Cadets, United States Coast Guard Academy

Midshipmen, United States Merchant Marine Academy

United States Army

United States Marine Corps

United States Navy

United States Air Force

United States Coast Guard

Army National Guard of the United States

Army Reserve

Marine Corps Reserve

Naval Reserve

Air National Guard of the United States

Air Force Reserve

Coast Guard Reserve

Other training organizations of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard, in that order

Big formation!!

I'd Have to go with "First come, first in order".

How did the Marines get to the beach, without the Navy?

I'd go with the order they have them behind the bar at the Dockside :)
 I kid you not, you are the second person that told me that. For the uninitiated, "The Dockside" is a local watering hole that is attached to our American Legion. Some refer to the establishment as "The White House"....well, because its white. On the wall behind the bar are the five seals. God only knows how FJRVFR knows about this coming from Utah. The true sign of a professional drinker is when he knows that there are 5 seals behind the bar in an American Legion in an obscure place like Sag Harbor.

It just so happens that we are holding a "meet and greet" breakfast for about 80 1/9 Marines at the same Legion on the morning of November 15th.

Thats The Dockside/American Legion in the background with the flag at half staff shortly after Jordan's death.

Adjective:Marine 3 -Of or relating to military personnel who serve both on land and at sea (specifically the U.S. Marine Corps)
But all tech-aside,we love all our military sevice members,past/now/future.

Thanks, I try and maintain a certain level of "professionalism" at all times.
