Saw it this morning on Sportscenter; sat there shaking my head. I did some crazy shit on a dirtbike when I was younger (10 ft tall & bulletproof), but the thought of doing a backflip really never occured to me. Let alone doing a DOUBLE!

I did actually watch some of that while I was channel flipping. I saw some guy try to do some flip where he pushes the bike away then tries to get back on and ended up underrotating and wiping out, looked like he damaged a shoulder. Pretty impressive feat, though.

Anyway, what I noticed was the lack of safety gear on this guy. He did have a helmet, gloves and I guess, some armor on the pants, but it didn't look like he had any chest/back protection, and he was in short sleeves! No arm/elbow anything. I don't really follow stunt-dirt-riding (I can certainly appreciate the skill, er, skilz), but is that lack of gear normal?

It's on again in little over an hour (3pm PDT ABC)

Edit: Looks like the ESPN website is wrong, check the link for listings & times in your area

ESPN & 6pm here in California, Tivo is set

And the Rallye Car final came down to the very same Pastrana and former WRC champ Colin McRae(sp). Colin was a second or so under Travis' time coming into the third from last turn, rolled his Subie a full 360 and finished less than a second behind Pastrana!

Pastrana was blown away and couldn't talk about anything except the amazing finish by McRae.

That double back flip was un-fackin-believable. I don't think he'll do too many of them though.

The thing I like about Travis if he's a very humble guy. Not at all like the idiot Metal Mulisha boys. Those guys have hit their heads too many times.

I really wished Travis would have stuck with Supercross and given Ricky a run, I think he could have done it had he not been injured so often.

He is something else to watch.

My son hollered, “dad come quick, watch this”! I got to see the replay. :) Am still in shock!

Wasn't it only like LAST YEAR that Metzger freaked everyone out by landing a single backflip???? Now they're doing those with off-bike layouts, Cordova's and wild manuevers that nobody dreamed were possible just a short while ago. Wonder what the next big hurdle they'll overcome will be... How about a modified Superman where they rotate the bike underneath them in a complete circle? Course, you miss that one, and you're gonna die.

I saw in on "Wind Tunnel". Despain said when he interviewed Pastrana, he said he wasn't going to do it again (after the first time) but he did. Despain also was disappointed that Pastrana didn't continue his motocross racing but said Pastrana was going to World Cup Rally driving as his next challenge.

It was frekin awsome double backflip.......I'm only up to one backflip on the FJR. I'll keep practicing...LOL :)

I saw the guy you were talking about. He was from France (maybe) and had only arrived a day or two before the event. He borrowed the bike and whatever gear he could and went for it. Crazy....

Motocrosser Quits After Learning Physics

July 27, 2006 | Onion Sports

TALLAHASSEE, FL—Reigning AMA Motocross national champion Ricky Carmichael, considered by many to be the greatest off-road motorcycle rider in history, abruptly announced his retirement from competition Monday after completing a summer course in physics at Florida State University. "I've had a great run in both professional motocross and Supercross, but the more I learn about kinetic energy, momentum, and ballistics, I'm beginning to think I've had a pretty good run of luck, too," said Carmichael, whose instructors said seemed particularly interested in the effects that gravity and sudden deceleration could have on a Suzuki RMZ250 four-stroke dirt bike. "I'd like to thank everyone and everything that helped me get this far, especially the considerable gyroscopic forces of the wheels on my race bikes, which were apparently sometimes the only thing keeping me from sublimating into a liquid state of matter." Carmichael is rumored to be considering a career in NASCAR after completing courses in business and marketing.
