I picked up a Super Motard type bike recently, and it redefines what street motorcycle riding is about. Obviously its not something for long distances, but for riding up and down twisty mountain roads, its an incredible experience. It just goes where you will it to go. Almost no use of brakes.... just row the tranny.... You can enter curves at speeds that a heavy ST type bike could only dream about, flick, and your out the other side. I don't think I've had this much fun riding a bike since the days of the TL 125.

My lil' red Versys count? :yahoo:
If everything goes according to plan, I'll have a Versys buy spring. I've wanted an FJR forever, and to tell you the truth, my purchase of it in May was a complete serendipitous fluke, I was saving up for either a Versys, or a 1250 Bandit. For most of the riding I do, the Versys would be perfect. I still hang out on the Versys boards.

Just wish they'd offer ABS in North America.

I don't know the specs. The Super Moto type bikes tend to weigh in around 325 to 350 pounds, and have power levels around 50 to 60 hp.

I know the Versys is a neat bike, but is it more of a dual sport? Or is it along the lines of a super moto?

In any event, I know its gotta be light compared to any kinda sport touring type bike.

Sure, let it count.

This puppy is my new desktop, which means it's just a matter of time ('til I'm divorced  )

Me likes to slide the dualsports on the street but the big sticky rubber eludes me. The reality is the DR650 will get the motard treatment since the Husky is just too damn good in the dirt to mess with.

It really is ridiculous how much easier a light bike can shoot the twisties over the FJR. However the FJR sees far less reruns!

Check out my avatar! The DRZ400S (home made Supermoto) is the best of all three worlds. Dirt, street, track, it does it all, mind you not perfectly, but it's the best all around bike I've ever owned. Yes... I can horse it into and out of curves much faster than the FJR as long as it's below triple digits, then the Feejer rules. With a second set of wheels/tires, I can complete the change over from dual sport to Supermoto in under an hour. Fun stuff!

Kinda.

This is my other bike, and I think a 'tard or dual sport is the absolute best Yin to the FJR Yang.
Hey, nice bike, but Look out there seems to be a tornado starting to form behind your bike! :dribble: :dribble:

I have been eyeing the KLR650. I don't believe this is considered a Super Motard but it will be my first Dual Sport.

I love my KTM 625smc and Husaberg FS650c. I RR and SM my ktm and upgraded to the berg, but couldn't let the KTM go. I keep the KTM for street and practice and the Berg is for track only. Sm's are a blast!

You will not regret it for a second!

Me too.

Neither really. Dual sport on a Versys is only a fantasy...light adventure touring, no problem. It is a fat lil pig @ around 400# when compared to a motard but the horsepower is comparable. And it ROCKS in the fun department, so in that regard it is a motard cousin.

Yeah, Been racing supermoto for 4 years, love it
What's the sanctioning body? I looked up AMA, and it appears that they may have had supermoto events at one time several years ago, but they don't now. Who's doing it? Is there an active web site?

SM is alive and well at the AMA. https://www.amasupermoto.com/index.php?UID=...pAUAzTShFEyu4eY
That's the web site I went to originally. When you go to the calendar to "find a race near you," you end up with the end result that there are no matches, even if you use "all states" as the place to search.

Maybe the reason for this is that the season is over and they haven't posted the new season yet.

so what you get?

i've been interested in the KTM 950 SMR. But not sure that fits most people's definition of an SM. 690 is intriguingl, but rode a 950 a while back (not the SMR) and liked it a lot.....

We have a new KTM dealer here in town, and he says he's going to carry these in the new season, but for now his stock is limited to the straight up dirt stuff.

I bought a new leftover 2007 BMW G650Xmoto after the price dropped to 60% of msrp. I've put a bit over 400 miles on it in the past week and a half and it is truly a gas. I think the KTM 690 would be even more fun with its slightly greater power level and similar weight. And, of course, one that you customized yourself, starting with a Japanese light weight dirt bike, would probably be even more fun still.

I have to say that I think the Xmoto didn't make it because its too "well finished" and too "pricey" at its msrp. That, and the fact the true kool aide drinkin' BMW guys recognize that the bike was really made under contract by Aprillia and has a Rotax power plant. When I drove down to get it I told a friend that I was going to retrieve an orphan.

Its sort of interesting (at least to me) that back when the Honda XL250 came out (4 valve single enduro type bike) one of the mechanics at the dealership where I worked bought the first one in the crate, and assembled it with small diameter wheels with street tires. He made a few other modifications, and actually took it to race in AAMRR events. I remember going with him to Louden and laying on the infield inside corners to take the sweet pictures of the bikes in full lean. Full lean didn't mean much in those days compared to today, that's for sure.

In any event, I mentioned the little 324 pound 53 hp Xmoto to him the other day, and he said "Sounds like my old XL250 with twice the power, modern brakes, and a decent suspension. Should be a lotta fun."

I think he's right.

No idea how SM rides compared to the FJR or sportbike, but I really love the looks of the Ducati Hypermotard. My only concern is the small gas tank and the fact that my wife will divorce me if I add a stablemate to my FJR.

Yamaha WR250x looks pretty sweet too - not too sure how 250cc will handle the superslab though.
