A fellow coworker had one of those; he had a hard time riding it. He crashed it a few times before really wrecking himself at the same time. He healed, the bike was repaired; the first ride was to a company picnic where they crashed again with a big audience. The last I heard from him they were still riding and crashing. He was never quite able to get a good balance between cornering and when the boost came on. When the bike was upright and mostly pointed straight ahead it went like heck!

Worked at a dealer here in highschool - 3 of those went out, within a week - all 3 were back laid down on a corner.... turbo kicked in and down they go.....

No such thing.

The midnight special was only in years 80 and 81. You may have a '79 XS1100 special, but not the black and gold midnight special.
The '80' Yamaha XS1100 LH came out and was sold in 1979 but it was a 1980 model.

many friends are on the club XS1100, it's a very nice moto...

Same men have often a GTS1000, one of my favorite bike

Yep. There must be a number of old XS Eleven owners here. I had brand a new '79 Red Special while in college. Loved that bike until some Okie stole it out from under me...got an '80 XS 850 with the insurance money...but it wasn't close to being the same.

There is only one way to tell you this Niehart, you are wrong. An XS1100LH is the designation for a 1981 Midnight Special. A 1980 Midnight Special is designated XS1100LG. Again there was no Midnight Special for model year 1979, you may have been able to buy a 1980 model in late '79, but is was an 80, not a '79. Ask the man who has owned several, ahem, me. Just sayin'

Just for the fun of it. Here's another picture of my 1979 XS1100SF.

1983 XJ750MK Midnight Maxim Black and gold undergoing restoration is in my shop. Bought it new. Never been rode by anyone else.

And a 1986 Venture Royale I bought in December and rode it home 3 1/2 hours. That 2 tone brown is a good looking machine.

My oldest Yamaha.

I love it. 1974 TY 250.

Still going strong and ridden every chance I get.
