Just like the title says

Has anyone ever had to replace their final drive ?

Worn out bearings, ring and pinion, etc ....

- Dealer says parts are not available, only the whole final drive ...

Never heard of one, no. However, I can imagine one being abused and fail. I happen to have a spare if you want to PM.

Had to, no. Wanted to, yes, to change the gear ratio. Other than that it has primarily been seals and an occasional very rare bearing.

If that dealer says no parts are available, just a $900 whole drive you don't want to give him your money or let him work on your FJR.

Every item below that has a number is available individually. Often the dealer has supplemental fiches that will show even more parts. Note that the ring and pinion gear do not have an individual P/N but I'll bet a motivated dealer could find those parts.

Edit: I see that fast typin' Ross answered the OP while I was typin' slow.

Parts are available, but if your dealer is doing the job it might not be cost-effective to have him strip and rebuild a final drive.

Replacement is quick, and with labor charges hitting $100 per hour in some places, it doesn't take long to rack up a charge higher than the simple cost of replacement.

Yeah .. started out as just a replace the seals repair ($450 with labor)

.... ring and pinion are worn - that is the part that they said they could not get ...

450.00 is a lot just to change out the seals. If the ring and pinion are gone I would think the case would be full of metal. I've resealed a couple of them and never found any bearing or gear wear. Sounds odd to me. Either way like has been said find a replacement or PM Iggy and get back on the road

It is almost unheard of for the ring and pinion to be bad. How many miles? Was there some event that (may have) caused the gear set to go bad? It is possible to setup the shimming wrong and get both ugly noise and improper wear.

44,000 HARD miles ... I changed the gear oil at the suggested intervals ... never saw metal

I did start to feel some "grindy-ness" the last time I did a tire change ....

(knowing that I was going to have to get the seals replaced - where I would also find out if there was anything else to be concerned about ... which I did)

There is also a company called RM Sportmax in either NC or PA that services Yammy final drives. I had the guy drop in a VMax rear gear into another pumpkin I bought for my Royal Star a few years back, he does decent work for fairly cheap. I tried to look up their website however it seems down for the count, but if you do some googling I'm sure you can find a phone number. Well known in the VMax/Venture community.

What are "HARD" miles? Unless it was run without oil, submerged numerous times, or there was sand in the case, those miles can't be any harder than any other FJR on the planet. These drives are almost literally bullet-proof, so I'll be in the corner with the skeptics that doubt what the dealer is telling you.

I'm scratching my head wondering the same thing. I've never heard of it on the FJR other than from crash damage (or "service" neglect from water intrusion, lack up lube, etc.).

Blue Ridge Mountain Sportmax is the place: https://www.rmsportmax.com/

Site seems to be up and running normally. And yes, I have one of their awesome re-geared Final Drives on my Gen I.

Mr. BR

Orient us. Is this two different final drives side by side? Did you buy a used one and not check to make sure it was the same generation as yours?

....come to think of it I *thought* when I first posted you had a Gen 2 (2006+ bike) in your profile. I see you have a Gen 1 now.

Thanks for the help bluesdog !

... it was late last night ... (returning home from winning another rally race in Minnesota)

what I am guessing - is that the new final drive on the left - came with the gear coupling (correctly) attached to the final drive

... where in my old final drive on the right, the "smaller gear" which the gear coupling bolts to (?), is broken off .. so I was able to pull the drive shaft and gear coupling assembly out of the old final drive.

So, to the point: How do I remove the old gear coupling from the drive shaft ?

... and on another note ... I will post some pics of the damaged ring gear later today - which elicited replacing the final drive ...
