I am looking at either the FJR1300 (with a clutch) or the BMW R1200RT .....

Has anyone had both for a while and can give some comparison comments as regards living with each ?

Thanks,

Nick

I haven't lived with the 1200RT, I test rode one for an hour before I bought the FJR. Nice bike but not for me.

My reasons?

the motor (rather have a 4 than a two banger)

the price (they want how much ???)

the local dealer ( snotty doesn't begin to describe them )

maintenance $$$

My riding buddy with his 1150RT got a burned valve, to the tune of $600, at 30k miles, probably because of poor valve adjustment by the same dealer I did the test ride at. He changed dealers, now he has to ride 75-80 minutes (one way) for service.

YMMV, no connection to any dealer, etc etc

(edit)

I did like the practical plastic on the tank to allow tank bags & stuff to be attached to the tank - nifty idea

I demo'd an rt before I got the fjr. At the time I had an st1300. When I got off the bmw i thought my st1300 honda was superior to the bmw. The bmw is smooth and a very nice ride but not for the money to buy one and then the maintenance costs are crazy. I got rid of the honda due to the heat and since yamaha addressed the issue with the 06 that is what I ride now. It is almost a no brainer to go with the fjr unless of course your lifelong dream is to own a bmw. Good luck and ride safe. Everett

I have to totally agree with both above statements. The Rt is smooth but not sporty. I did the test drive thing on the RT ( a friend with his 1150 just couldn't stop raving about it). Just not for me.

If you are trying for an apples to apples comp. From BMW the 06 GT is closer to the FJR than the RT.

I had an old BMW and was going to buy a new one. It was between the 2004 K1200GT and the 2005 R1200RT.

The RT gets into the turns better than the RT. The K motor had much smoother power delivery than the overly torquey and twitchy fuel injected 1200 twin.

Also, the new brakes on the 2005 were WAY too touchy...they supposedly have fixed that problem with the 06 and 07 models.

I was having a hard time choosing and then I lucked into a test ride on the FJR. It was superior in every way. I bought one and 15 months and 28,000 miles later I am still happy (yep, 26k service done and all valves were still within spec).

I test road the 06 FJR for an hour and it's even better (IMO) than the '05.

Get the FJR.
