Anyone not have collision insurance?

Collision and comprehensive coverage are optional in my policy. I'm thinking about dropping the collision on my '04 FJR. Any rules of thumb on when it's sensible to go without collision?
If I was to crash and really crunch the bike I'd probably not buy another one.
So, how much would you save? I pay 5 something a year for full coverage, 250 deductable.

To do this? Once the value of the bike drops below the price it cost to protect my wallet- I will drop these extras as well.

I haven't really asked the question, what part of the policy covers your gear/accessories? i am assuming it is the collision.

I like you would more than likely not replace my bike if it were messed up to bad. That would more depend on how it got destroyed!

Me not paying attention and some ass hat taking me out.... more than likely not going to replace bike.

Me riding beyond my skills/ hot dogging- I think I would put myself in the penalty box for 3-5 years.

Me hitting something unseen in road i.e gravel, deer, etc. I would have bike fix and ride again....

Depends on your tolerance for risk and whether you are prepared for the consequences. I have not carried collision on a car or motorcycle since 1978 and have had dozens of bikes since then. Had some minor damage a few times from tip-overs, which the deductable would have covered anyway. I had one worse one in 2000 on a Goldwing, when I went around a corner in town at 20 mph or so and there were five quart-bottles of oil squashed on the road with oil everywhere. Me and Goldwing went flying. I repaired the whole thing for $1000 doing the work myself. Deductable for a reasonable policy would have been likely $500, so it cost me $500 not to have the insurance. I have saved a LOT of money over those years not carrying collision, but there are just as many stories of total losses...that's the insurance risk. Pays ya money and takes ya chances.

Insurance rates vary greatly by state, bike, age of rider and company, etc.
Once upon a time there was a survey here on the board you might be able to dig that up if you search (tho I didn't find it).

I pay roughly $360 a year for everything, comp/collision and liability at 250/500 (up from 100/300 which was the min required for the Void Rally if I recall correctly).

But keep in mind State Farm also has all 4 of our cars, and our home insured as well, so that's part of it.
"Everything" means a lot of things to different people . . .

250/500 isn't enough for me

uninsured / underinsured rider might be the most important thing many people overlook or decline without really thinking about it. I carry $1mm on that - think about it a bit

You can only really compare a whole 'package' to another containing the exact coverage - btw here in Connecticut it cost me (62 years old with xclnt driving record) less than $600 to insure my '08 with 'everything' :)
Wow, 1M$ coverage, it is obvious I've fallen in with a bunch of irresponsible, radical, hells angels types, lol.

What are you people, trust fund babies or something?

Yeah, your damn right I'm jelous! I'll have you know I have all the essential skills, in no trump, to be a magnificent trust fund baby!

I checked the insurance prices for my 2003 and the reason they want about $600 from me rather than ~ $300 is that I have one ticket. But here is the rub, that ticket is not for being faster than a speeding bullet, or being a general menace to navigation, it is for making a wrong turn - on a one way - in an urban area - in a rainstom - while driving a Crown Victoria - following instructions from mapquest - on a day when it seemed my fellow motorists were out to get me. The ticket cost me about $200, but as a result of it insurance since has cost me an extra thousand. I guess the weirdest thing is that the cost of even the theft insurance is higher?

Insurance is a racket, they pissed me off and I'm going liability only if for nothing more than the satisfaction of knowing that some of their VPs may have to ingest inferior cavier once or twice! Well, at least for another 4 months when that ticket is more than 3 years old, lol.

Not twenty minutes after getting that ticket, I stopped on a dime avoiding being t-boned by someone running a red light. Not an hour before getting the ticket I pulled on to the shoulder of a superslab because the car to my right took my lane.

I think what he's getting at is... Generally your uninsured motorists is a reflection of the liability you carry. So if you carry the minimum ($25k in OHIO? or there abouts)... The most you'll get to cover your injuries should you be hit by said uninsured motorist is $25k, and that is a DROP in the bucket with today's medical costs. That might not even cover the ride in the big fancy helicopter.

250/500 for me is adequate, at this time, only because to get coverage up to $1M I think you we had to carry that on ALL vehicles and carry a PLUP (Personal Liability Unbrella Policy) or some such silliness. That proved to be too expensive overall for me, at this time, or they wouldn't write that becuause of the horses, I can't remember.

$250 still isn't a lot if you're seriously injured...

That being said, the cost to go to 250/500 from 100/300 was litterally a few dollars per year and well worth it IMHO.

You are exactly correct - 10 years ago my riding buddy and I rode together after he bought his brand new Duc. After we split up to go home he was hit by a kid pulling out of a side street. There were plenty of witnesses. Nobody was going fast. the kid just didn't see my friend. It wasn't a question of fault. The kid's father (owner of the car) ONLY had $500K in liability. Their insurance company turned over the policy after 1 letter from my friends' attorney. Fortunately my friend had uninsured / underinsured coverage, a lot of it.

Exactly how much money do you need for the rest of your life if you can't work? My friend rides a wheelchair now.

There isn't a day goes by that I don't think about him.

Droping collision was not a huge saving for me (about $120.00 bucks a year). So that said, I thought 10 bucks a month was not a big deal to insure the FJR, as I probably could not afford to replace it out of the blue. But if it was a lot of money, I might consider it.
