Are all BMVs incompetant?

[rant] Indiana BMV sucks. Yeah, I screwed up and had an outdated insurance card during my accident. Yeah the officer at the scene wrote the wrong production year of my car down on the accident report. Fine. I've had my insurance company FAX the information 4 times and I've called 6 times, finally to figure out that between the two snafus, the BMV just ceases to function properly. NO ONE CAN HELP. They never seem to get any faxes or any emails sent by me, my insurance company (I've been CCd, so I know it goes through), and the local PD. Now I have to physically go to the NEXT COUNTY and present the documents in person and HOPEFULLY (no gauruntee) get my license reinstated before leaving for NAFO on Saturday. What a CLUSTER ****. I could just tell my friend "his Honor" to call and straighten it out, or I could fax it again and carry my paperwork with me, but I would just assume fix it in person, if I can.

And the accident wasn't even my fault. And my car is still in the shop. Oh wait, I turned off the rant. Happy thoughts, happy thoughts, good kharma, good kharma.......

I'm guessing that in some locales this agency is referred to as the BUREAU of Motor Vehicles, rather than the DEPARTMENT of Motor Vehicles.

Some states have Department of Motor Vehicles (DMVs). Some (Indiana) have Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMVs).

For stuff like this, sometimes there is no alternative to doing it in person.

Same situation down here in S. New Mexico. Most of the DMVs are contract. They hire the the least motivated

of the unmotivated and pay them just enough not to care.

NM verifies insurance periodically and sends a notice they will pull your registration if they don't see that you have

insurance. I had an issue where my insurance co. sent them the proof of insurance with one wrong digit in the VIN #.

There was no way that I could convince them that it was a clerical error. Took MONTHs to iron out.

I feel your pain...good luck getting it resolved.

BMVs, DMVs. MVDs, they can be a hassle. Find one that can work with/for you, if possible (neighboring town or county?). I used to have to deal with one where the old gal who ran things felt her job was to keep everyone from getting a title -- I dreaded going there (especially, for motorcycle titles for bikes with, maybe?, unusual backgrounds -- hadn't been licensed for awhile, etc.).

Well, once I went to a neighboring town in a different county and the gal there read my 'statement of facts' and said. "That'll never fly." I said, "What would?" She said (giving me a new form), "Write what I tell you."

I always went there after that....

I should amend my post to say that the Indianapolis [SIZE=18pt]BMV[/SIZE] sucks.

I took the time to drive to the next county and walked my papers in to the "reinstatement center". Only one person working the counter. Ugh. Oh, but only one other patron.

Anyway, problem solved in about 10 minutes. The very nice, personable lady who assisted me faxed my documents to Indianapolis, then we had a nice little chat. She advised me that there was a TEAM of lawyers on staff at the other end of the fax machine who actually review the documents as they come in and then reinstate or deny on the spot.

One thing interesting that she did tell me was that ANYONE who is in an accident in Indiana will get a form requesting them to substantiate their insurance coverage. She also said that now many drivers that are ticketed are also approached by the state to substantiate insurance coverage. And she also said that the request for my insurance coverage from the state had NOTHING to do with the fact that I had an invalid insurance card in my car.... I would have been summoned by the state regardless.

Sometimes real beats virtual or cyber, hands down.
