I'm in, though I don't know how seriously they'll take us outsiders. Spent some time in Knoxville back in the eightys and run the gap a few miles with friends. Hope the petition works out.

bounce ya lost me at the loose lassies getin' layed :D

:jester:

Hey ...what can I say? I copied it from another forum.

Should have corrected it before I posted but was too loose from the whine I had for dinner. :D

Now! Back to the subject at hand.

What the hell is the highway 3 project and is it likely to destroy Deals Gap as we know it?

Mark... Just fix the damn thing next time smarty pants! ;) Never mind, I'll holler at Mr. Slapnpop. He'll straighten me, I mean it, out.

Besides, I'm terribly distraught right now as I do not have a bike that runs at this time. :(

Here is the link to the on line petition to stop the new Highway 3 project.

People Against Highway 3

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To: North Carolina, Tenn. and GA legislators

We, the undersigned (heretofore referred to as "we"), have joined together to make public the dissension among the general population on the subject of the proposed Highway 3 project spanning from Savannah, Georgia to Knoxville, Tennessee. We feel that the construction of such a highway would destroy several natural attractions, quaint hometowns, delicately balanced ecosystems as well as upset the delicate economies of numerous townships along its path, not the least of which being places such as Deal's Gap, the "Tail of the Dragon" (US 129), the Cherohala area and many others. By signature of this document, we show our continuing dismay that such a project would be considered, and also that we may withhold votes from those regional legislators and other proponents of this particular project.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

I'm not an admin so can't edit other people's posts. Since you deleted the original and started the thread over again, does that mean we have to go hijack the thead all over again?

Hey! Didn't I just see your twin brother post yesterday? Who let him loose and when did you lose him?

You don't want me and my twin to come down there. We are walking and very mad and would be very very old and tired by the time we get a hold of you!

So I stole some bad copy. You didn't catch the other misspellings in the body of the petition.

I have notified the author to correct them because this was too distracting and was lessening the importance of the cause.

Just kidding around with you Mark, about walking to Texas to get you. You know I could borrow a bike if it was that important. :cownoy:

Since I live in NY I have no idea what this road 'improvement' project entails. Are they looking at adding a new highway that will parallel the same routes or will they be replacing or destroying some of the famous roads?

If they are adding a new road without destroying the original roads then I can certainly see how it would impact the local economy but it might be a good thing for bikers since it will divert some of the traffic.

If they are destroying the existing roads then we need to do something and I don't know if a petition from out of state voters will be enough. Probably should contact the AMA to get some expert advice if you haven't already done so.

Quick synopsis with possible reading errors oin my part:

enacted as part of the big omnibus 2005 spending bill, it's required to do a two year study before proceeding, and the proposed route would overlay 129, but it's not clear whether it would replace or add to existing roads. I can speak from personal experience about the new interstate section added acroos sam's gap between Johnson City, TN, and Asheville, NC. The highway is very nice to travel on, and the old road is still there to ride the bike on, with MUCH less traffic. There was a LOT LOT LOT of land destroyed thought, and it doesn't really justify it in my mind.

From a purely motorcycle point of view, I would argue that the interstate should be put forth, but that it should not demolish any existing parts of 129 considered sacred. There's about 40 miles that's really good motorcyclist road, with only about 11 of that being "the dragon."

And when you look at the maps and the proposed routing, it would make sense to follow the path below. You would eliminate about 8 bridges, 30 miles, and would stay further away from the national park. my guess at the insterstate route is in red, and the "dragon" section of deals is in blue.

Of course this is all conjecture until we see a proposed route.

That was a very cool presentation Mr. snapnpop! :) Now do a map of 421 from here to there or over the mountains to Shady Valley.

I really like to ride that place and we need to get the EOM set up there for 06 so I can show off my new bike.

...And tell Mark to quit pickin' on me or I'll send Larry The Cable Guy down to make fun of him!

If it's okay I'll start another thread and you can keep Mark out.

All those posting errors were only half my fault. :D
