Tab with keyboard gives you 10 hours and USB/SD/sdmicro/hdmi.

I've pretty much put away my laptop.

Apple is not the only fruit on the tree anymore!
What is a Tab? Sorry but as an old fart it is hard to keep up with he changing technology. Thanks!
Asus tablets in the transformer line have an available keyboard the provides battery and additional acessability ports.
Thank you for helping me learn something today!
More than welcome.

Tough market with all the options out there.

Jeff

Instead of a tablet I bought a Lenovo x120e PC for $350 from a friend who is a reseller. it has about 8x11, has a 1.6 ghz processor with 4 meg of ram and a 300 gig hard drive. I like it due to a 5 hour battery life and ability to do things and Ipad can't. It is very portable. It is not speedy but to keep it running as fast as possible I don't load anymore software than I need. Mapsource, Chrome, a virus program, Window Live Photo Gallery and that is about it.

This machine works fine for internet use and writing this post while in my easy chair. It has a very nice keyboard - top that Ipad!

5 hours? iPad does 10 hours. :p
True but the Ipad does not have two usb connections or an HDMI. This mini PC provides lots of utility vs the Ipads cool and neat app factors. Being an old fart I like a keyboard too. I wrote most of my blog on using this mini PC and most of my forum post.
Didn't know about the USB & HDMI ports. Now that's cool! :) but then again, everything on my Laptop is on the iPad. Including all my Microsoft files thanks to Documents-to-go. :D

Been pondering getting a tablet myself.

Can you run BaseCamp / MapSucks on an iPad / Android system? Other than the basics (browsing and email), that's one thing I wanna be able to do while on the road.

I overheard a conversation last week - a couple of fellas were discussing the whole iPad / iPadMini. One of 'em mentioned that you cannot multi-task on an iPad. I thought that sounded kinda funny. Thoughts?

If you are just sitting around using it as a consumption device about any tablet will do Roger. If you plan on using it as a reader in bed I'd go with a seven inch. I have the Nexus 7 from Google since I use Google products for most things theses days but it's made by ASUS. Think about the operating system more than the device, Android or IOS.

No tablets can function as a map transfer device to GPS as far as I know. You still need at least a netbook for that. Maybe the new Microsoft Surface running RT or Windows 8?.

If you want to avoid the iOS selections (and they are excellent if you can afford them), then consider the Nexus 7 or Nexus 10 (depending on the size you prefer). Both have very high marks for Android. The hardware is top notch and probably the single most competitive product against the iPad juggernaut (at this time).

So, do you want to create or consume content? If both, then a maybe one of the new hybrid ("transformer") laptops would fit the bill. Lenovo is an excellent product line and their new "IdeaPad Yoga" (4:15 in @ https://revision3.com/tekzilla/free-remote-desktop-chrome#rev3Player ) might be just the ticket. The screen hinge design seems more robust than some competitors' flip/twist/pivot designs. That would be in keeping with Lenovo's tradition of building sturdy systems (with good keyboards btw).

If you can wait, see what the Windows 8 tablets are like when they come out (avoid the Windows RT tablets that just came out since RT isn't Win8 and can only use apps you get through their app store (which is very limited)). The Win8 tablets will run standard windows programs when they come out later this year or early next year. It's not that you will definitely want a Win8 tablet but it will give you a chance to compare it to Android and iOS. The "Metro" interface (when used on a tablet) is very functional and possibly the most significant redesign by Microsoft since Windows 95 (when used on a desktop/laptop PC, the iOS-ification of the desktop by all manufacturers is questionable in it's roll as a content creator; regardless of if it's Apple or MS that's trying it).

The problem with trying to find a "good" tablet is that they end up costing as much (or nearly as much) as an iPad. So, if you're spending that much anyway, then why not get the best and the whole support infrastructure that comes with it.

Beyond that, the problem with tablets in general is that they aren't designed to "create" content, just consume it. Even with a Blue Tooth keyboard they are still not up to heavy lifting. If your intent is to read, watch movies, play music, surf the internet, and do e-mail, then that's fine. Sharing docs created on your main computer (though some shared cloud service) also works but long documents, graphics, etc. are still best served with laptop or desktop. The tech media is pushing mobile computing because it gives them something different to write about and that's interesting to them and draws eyes to their work. Consider the media focus on performance cars versus long haul trucks. In fact, some tech media is comparing the desktop/laptop to "trucks" and its obvious they plan to shift them to the back burner of their coverage. The trick for the reader is to not confuse that with some misguided ideas that they no longer have any roll to play at all.

Thank you sooo much guys :) Lots of talent on this site, but I already was aware of that. A plethora of food for thought - have to keep Deb clear of the forum for a while

And I'll (we'll) be consuming content, not creating. Use will be mainly for e-mail and web content at home and on the road.

I use the Asus TF-101 on all of my motorcycle trips. Connects easy at any WiFi in US and Canada. Total solid state so no problems with mototcycle use. Face is armored glass so no protector needed. I like the fact that you can use a micro SD card since that is what my camera uses. The provided software works well with Microsoft Office and MS Spreadsheets so I can have trips plans along with me. Goggle Maps gives me up to date info on things in the local area.

I do not use a GPS and have only a very basic cell phone. The tablet works very well for me.

No, BaseCamp and MapSource only run on Windows and Mac (MapSource, Windows only). However, there are many GPS apps on both iOS and Android that can import GPX files exported from BaseCamp/MapSource. I personally use Gaia GPS on my iPad for all my Jeep trails.

If that's what you'll be doing with it then The iPad is the way to go. It's perfect for walking around the house or anywhere else for that matter in your PJ's connected to anywhere you want to go. You'll love it. :)

Another option is the Kindle Fire HD. If you use the Amazon marketplace much at all, it's a real contender. If you buy the cellular version (3G) then there are no additional monthly fees. You get a year free of Amazon Prime membership (which nets you free 2 day shipping with all Amazon orders as well as access to a VERY extensive collection of free streaming movies and other media). It's that handy format that everyone likes and in a pretty well sorted combination of hardware and software.

Plus it's half the price of the base iPad 4 and $130 cheaper than the iPad Mini. That means it's significantly cheaper than the iPad contenders that seem to think they can beat the iPad by costing the same as an iPad.

The rumors I've heard about the Windows 8 tablets, etc. is that they may be in the $1000+ range depending on configurations.

Throw me into the laptop camp. Have traveled with both iPad and MBP (macbook pro). Hated not being able to download pix from camera for pix manipulation (size, color adjust, crop, etc) then sftp up to website. Since I'm in a hotel room most every night, 10 hour life doesn't matter. I travel in civilized nations that have juice in the walls. And an inverter on KrZy8 if need be. This whole 'no connections, truly wireless concept reminds of the so-called paperless society.

Good stuff there. I stopped traveling with a laptop when Apple released that camera connection kit. I use Snapseed and iPhoto for editing on the pad. It has no problem with my D700 RAW files. I'll upload to Box, Facebook, FTP, Email, etc. all from the iPad directly.

Of course I still transfer the masters to Aperture when I get home for archiving, organization, serious tweaking, etc.

Petty sure the iPad has more than 4 meg of ram though.

Just brought my girls the Samsung 10.1 Note...they did the research and are very Apple friendly by the way. I must say I was very impressed with it does a very good job in all aspects. Watched a preloaded HD movie and I was very very impressed even thought the screen is not HD? Cant wait to see the HD version (I have no doubt Samsung has one around the corner). They originally settled on the iPad but when they started to play and measure the two against each other well there was no reason to purchase the iPad.

Apple is a great product no doubt...but so is Samsung its really up to what you want it to do? Good luck!!!

After all of Carvers KrZy8 challenges this year ya have to ask - "Don does KrZy8 have any power!"

But after all the rational and learned discussion Rog, it (almost) always comes down to the emotional. If I buy Sylvia an I-Pad then she can "Facetime" with her/our 8 year old granddaughter.

Game, set, match! Happy Birthday sweetie (15th) here's your new I-Pad!

Skype is available for both iOS and Android (as well as Windows and OS X). With it you can video conference to anyone even if they don't have iOS. Check and Mate.

I hear you Bounce, but Skype is the most intrusive free program I've ever downloaded. I assume it gathers information and transmits it back to the mothership for resale. I've had to uninstall it at least twice from Syl's PC as it basically refused to allow itself to be turned off! (turn your back, and it would autoboot itself back up).

I'd be afraid to put it on a netbook - but I'm not remotely computer-techie either...

Odd. We have it on several WinXP, at least 1 or 2 Win7, an OS X Snow Leopard, OS X Mountain Lion, and on my dual boot HP Touchpad. In all cases, I check the "Startup" folders to make sure a shortcut hasn't been placed there but I do that on all Windows software installs. I also always do custom installs on all software since most (including Adobe stuff) wants to add extra sneak-ware (browser tool bars, etc.) in the express installs (it's how they pay for the free software).
