I like the view from behind, nice detail!. But you can get black out of a rattle can. Maybe pearlized Black?

I like it, but think I love the red/white bike in the background. Is that an early FJ?
Ya didn't call dibs, Carver.... :p

If ya ever think about thinin' the herd Maniac, holler at me...

Seriously...

And the paint turned out great!

Did you consider painting the side panels black?

Just a thought...

The bike looks great, your friend did good by you for quality and price. Enjoy the riding season now that you are back on the road.

Thanks. I did spend some time thinking about painting the side panels black and even played around with photoshop a little to see what it might look like. I decided I liked the accent that the silver panels add. The silver ties the frame and logo in together I think. Of course, in full disclosure, I am an engineer by trade and therefore have absolutely no freakin' clue about fashion / design / color combinations, etc. I just like the way it looks. A more *artistic* person may think it looks stuckin' foopid, but I dig it!

As for my '86 FJ, I'll keep you in mind, but I can't see letting go of it anytime soon. We have covered many happy miles together and I still enjoy riding it. It's a bit amazing to me - I get offers almost every year from people who would like to buy it from me. I guess it is a testament to the legacy of that model. Mama Yama had a good one there! It's only shortcomings (air cooled engine, chain drive, lack of factory side cases) were all addressed with the FJR. Still, there is a pleasing simplicity and focus of purpose in the FJ that still makes it joy to ride.

$650 is very reasonable. I spent 17 hrs (including disassembly/reassembly) and about $100 in material to do mine.
I thought so too. I did the disassembly / reassembly, but he did all of the panel repair before painting. Not sure how many hours he really had into it - I just know I couldn't do it as well as he did. I have tried my hand at body work in the past and have concluded that its not one of my strengths. To quote Clint Eastwood (in a few movies, I think) "Man's got to know his limitations". B)

BTW - I have seen photos of yours and it looks great too! I think red can be a really tricky color to work with - there are some shades that drift too much towards orange that I think look kind of crappy. Yours came out terrific.
