Hola Old Dominion Riders group,

With EOM drawn to a close, all of my organized rides for the year are over... but not my riding!!!

Would there be any interest in making a leaf peeping trip into the Virginia/West Virginia mountains? I was thinking about the last weekend of October or the 1st weekend of November. I'm not positive when peeping would be at a peak. Does anyone know?

I was thinking that an overnight trip/cameraderie (Saturday-Sunday) would be fun.

If there is interest or ideas please post up.

Heidi

Well, as luck would have it I may be on my own the last weekend of this month and while I am interested, I might also be able to make it!

Cool Jim!, according to the map Randy provided it also looks as though that will be the best weekend to go. I'm game f/ that specific weekend (October 26, 27).

Suggested routes are also welcomed by me. I'd rather limit time on the Parkway due to traffic overload... but realistically, that's probably the best place to view the leaf vistas.

Rte 250 has an overlook & is a good ride to boot. Anyone else got ideas???

Randy, probably the last weekend in October would be the best. According to the map you've posted we'd almost be too late. Can you do that weekend (Oct 26-27)?

How about 21-22 October? We could spend the night in Elkins, WV at the Elkins Motor Lodge. Reasonable prices, okay rooms.

My East Tennessee FJR is interested...may have to fit this ride in between two others...
I'll keep checking back.
Cool Mike!

In light of Mike's interest in coming I think that a more central location might be a wise choice. He'd be riding in fr/ Johnson City, TN.

Maybe Monterey, VA? There's a little motor lodge that sits behind a church... decent rooms at decent prices. There are a few places in town to eat, too... from fancy to crappy. I could check into the hotel. Also, any of those 3 weekends is good for me. My biggest interest is picking a "peak" weekend, though. Lets get a little more interest & put up a vote. This sound good?

Heidi

How about Covington, VA? About 40 or 50 miles south of Monterey, methinks. I have some routes there and back from a few rides over the past year that I could post and propose to the group. The Best Western Mountain View in Covington is an okay place with dinner, breakfast, and a lounge on the premises.

Monterey and/or Elkins is already 250 miles each way for me. If I'm riding solo, no big deal to add another 50 miles, but, I'd like to bring the Mrs. with me and this is going to take some coaxing as-is.

Anyone else have this book? It has some awesome routes in it. You can also check out Dale's website at https://www.appalachianhighways.com/ and sign up for his newsletter. Latest version of his newsletter - https://66.197.59.27/download/2006_08_Appal...an_Highways.htm

I just emailed this place to inquire about lodging. This motel is very decent & cheap. I also inquired about a group rate. I'll let you know when I hear back from them. There are many places to eat right across & up the street.

Randy, would this location be central for you? Elkin is really far out for me to make a nice weekend trip... but I'll flex w/ others.

Take a look/see at this place. It's a decent deal & is located on 250... one of the good roads in the area.

Per Mapquest, Monterey is 243 miles from me and Elkins is 247, so, either one doesn't make that much of a difference.

That is approximately how far Monterey would be for me. Haven't Mapquested either place but think that Covington is somewhere within 10-20 miles of that. Elkin is 300 plus miles out f/ me. Pretty far for a weekend jaunt.

Edited to add:

Covington, VA - 262 miles

Monterey, VA - 235 miles

Elkin, WV - 317 miles

Ya' know... even right into WV would probably be great! Maybe around Durbin, WV (Pocahontas County) or in that area? After all, this isn't where we'll meet... this is where we'd spend the night when we're finished.

Searching the Durbin area I come up with this hotel: click here This place looks ok, too. Not sure about on-site restaurant, though. Didn't read far enough into the site.

Edited to say: further investigation shows an on-site restaurant.

I'm flexible. Pretty much name the time and place and I'll be there.

Definitely want to stay away from Skyline Dr and the BRP that time of the year. Too many leaf peepers going 25 mph.

well, I've had such bad luck lately saying that I was gonna jump in and do something only to be blindsided by enough unexpected turns of events to make a Hitchcock film..... that I really don't want to jinx my ability to join you all. But, I'd sure like to make it. I'm gonna watch the thread and shuffle my feet, not commit, make like I'm not planning, deny any rumors vigorously, and heck I may not even say anything about it until the last minute. Maybe that way I'll end up being able to go.

yeh... I'm interested -- but not too much. B)

Heidi, don't plan the trip around how far it is from JoCy, TN. I may/may not be able to make the ride...depending on dates for 2 other planned rides. Plan the trip to suit the group and I'll ride whatever it takes to get there...assuming I can make it.

If you need someone to blow the leaves out of the way...I volunteer. :D

Hey Jeff!, whassuupp!

You're pretty far away. You'd blow the leaves for us? What a nice man! But seriously, you wanna' come... c'mon! It's a leaf peeping trip, though. No going 100 mph like you're known for. Didn't I hear someone call you Squidward?
