Left on Friday May 25th at 10:00AM for Auburn from SLO over CA. Highways 41/46/41
to Pea Soup Anderson's on I 5 in Santa Nella.
Rudy, Roberto and myself = "Los Tres Amigos" from the Central Coast
Before arrival in Auburn we had to split lanes through Sacramento on I 5, then up 80 all the way to Orangevale. This was probably due to it being a Friday, 4:30 PM, and the beginning of a 3 day weekend. Originally, we were going to run up to Oakhurst on CA. 41 then on up the 49, but a late start forced us to consider the super slab. The trip had been under clear, but slightly hazy skies, and probably reached 90+ degrees in the peak heat of the afternoon when on the Interstate.
This is the campsite we set-up at the BMW 49'er rally at the Auburn Fairgrounds.

Oddly(?) when we pulled in to the same area (near the pre-school) we had camped in last year, there was another FJR from Oregon already there. This is where we met "Bob" from Corvallis. After setting up the tents, etc. and having a spaghetti dinner cooked by the friendly BMW folks, we all headed over to "Fast Fridays Flat Track", which was a short walk from our campsite. It was fun to watch those kids hang off and lead drag a foot, do wheelies, and throw lots of dirt on the turns. Some of them really cook. The side cars races were also special.
Turned in Early (9:30 PM or so?) and woke the next morning at 6:00AM, and headed over to the showers. It had cooled to around 50 at night and was quite pleasant with no bugs that I detected. Next, coffee/sausage, toast, and eggs again, cooked and provided by the friendly BMW folks. Tried to get into the Vendor building to see if I could find a pair of light colored Motorrad ballistic pants with zip off legs (w/knee ballistics) for MC camping (80.00 = half retail price), but it was closed until 9:00AM. 9:00AM was when we were to depart for our day ride starting in Colfax, up the I 80 from Auburn near Grass Valley.
In Colfax we met a local FJR rider named Doug Plumley (Bugnator) and his buddy Rich of Grass Valley, CA. both riding sport bikes on this day. Doug on an FZ6 and Rich on a VFR1. After gassn' up at the Chevron in Colfax, we headed up Oak View Road (?) toward the Forest Hill Highway. Here's a couple of pics of the Yuba River off of that road.

After this brief stop we continued up the very tight and twisty paved road (Oak View Rd? sorry, I'm not sure of the name?) south east to the Forest Hill Highway. Turning East on Forest Hill we made it to the summit where we took some more pics.

After some general chat, including Doug's plan to run a BBG to Omaha from CA. we ran back down the very twisty mountain road back to the town of Forest Hill to a lunch stop here:

Doug and Rick turned out to be very capable guides/riders and we all enjoyed our ride and company that day. It was clear, 70 to 75 degrees and very dry up in that portion of the Sierras. After lunch they ran us back to the Fairgrounds in Auburn and Rick and Doug left to finish their day of riding, heading back north and to their barns. Thanks guys!
Back at the 49'er rally, "The 3 Amigos" had some beverages with the provided tokens in our registration packets, wandered around looking at all the Beemer's and chatted with a number of people about their bikes and our FJR's. It turns out "if" you wish to participate in a BMW you need to be sponsored by a BMW owner to pay the $30.00 registration fee to attend the Rally. Our "sponsor" is our own "Amigo" Rudy, who has/had until recently an R1100. Lots of rides, vendor displays, band music, raffles, movies, tech discussions, speakers, poker run, were offered at the 49'er Rally in Auburn. There are also BMW campout rallys in Big Bear and Quincy coming up later this year.
Saturday night was the rib and chicken BBQ with the "fixin's", catered dinner (@ $15.00/head). This was followed by music, and a live band. Lot's of "kibbitzing" this evening, but still managed to shower again, and turned in by 11:00PM.
Sunday morning May 27th, @8:00AM we departed Auburn for home in the Central Coast via 80/I 5/160 for a B-Fast Stop in Isleton on the Sacramento River for some crawdads.

After our morning meal, we continued to Antioch, then hooked up with the 4 South to 1 5 again. "Roberto" peeled off for Marina on 156 (Pacheco Pass) and I lost Rudy somewhere near Tracy? I ran I 5 to 33 through Coalinga/Avenal, then over 46/41 back to Morro Bay, and back to my barn of "Speed/Fuel Efficiency/Camping and Power". Upon return, my weekend included 4 fill-ups, and a total of 849 "miles of smiles" to end the first 3/4 of my Memorial Day weekend
Today, May 28th, "Veterans Day" the "wifey" and I, am watching the fly-bys over the local cemetary by the Vets.
