My August started off with a trip to Plano Texas for an all-expenses-paid vacatio.... training class with BMC Software. I had been looking forward to this trip for months. The class was a "bootcamp" for Control-M administration. I maintain the infrastructure and applications for my company's automation deployment and I was eager to receive some formal training.

On August 3, I got onboard an American Airlines flight to DFW feeling on top of the world. By the time i got off I was in severe resparatory distress. The flight itself was not the problem. I managed to get strep throat and some sort of (as my doctor calls it) "exotic form" of pneumonia. Of course, I didnt know that at the time. I just thought I caught a cold or flu. Being the idiot that I am, I attended the classes and tried to self medicate. That was probably the wrong thing to do but that is the way I am built.

The training lasted 5 days and on the morning of the 5th day, as I was talking a shower before cheking out of the hotel, I slipped and sprained my right knee. This made me fall backward and utterly distroy the toilet. Again, being the ******* I am, I stood up, got back in the shower and washed myself while standing on one foot... the same one that i slipped on. The hotel management wanted me to go to the hospital but I refused.

The last half of the friday class was dedicated to a certification test. I believe it was 65 questions, all multiple choice where I was required to select all options that applied to the question and none that were wrong. There was no partial credit for these questions. I missed the certification score by 5 points...

When I got home, I slept for two days straight. I only got out of bed to pee and drink water. On Tuesday I went to the doctor and she diagnosed me with Strep Throat, Asthma and Bronchitis. 10 days of antibiotics didnt cure it and I was at the point of having caughing fits that resulted in vomiting fits several times a day. I went back to the doc and was diagnosed with that "exotic" pneumonia. Exotic because the antibiotics should have fixed it up.

I am now on four medications, one antibiotic (normally used to treat stuff like Anthrax and Legionarie's Disease) and three different medications for Asthma. It took a few days but I am feeling better. The leg is healed enough for me to ride again...

Which in turn became a problem when I dropped my bike in the Walgreen's parking lot. There are only a few scratches and they are not easy to see but it still sucks.

The Asthma meds have me so wired I cant sleep more than an hour at a time. The doc said that I will get used to the stuff but until I do, insomnia will be the norm.

This story would make a good movie....but nobody would believe it!

I hate reading about other folks having a great time, being stoned, tearing up hotel rooms, etc., etc., and not inviting us along. Dang! Of course, there's always that "withdrawal" thing that you're going through.

Seriously, dude, I hope this month is a "pay it forward" for the next 10 years.

There's country song in there somewhere... ;) And as they say, when life hands you lemons, grab a bottle of tequila!
