I've been looking forward to this thing for years--literally. But thinking about it and doing something about it are not the same thing, it turns out. More than a year ago I started trying to find a room for this thing and I couldn't. Most were booked, and some wouldn't accept a reservation that far out.
But I do have a spot lined up now in a fully-booked-up campsite along the centerline in Idanha, OR, thanks to the forum and a generous offer to share from a member. But I got a warning about places like where I'll be and places like Madras, which is not too far east of where I'll be. It's going to be packed. Not just the hotels, motels and campgrounds, but the roads. In those parts, the roads are not real thoroughfares, and the traffic in and out could be a nightmare, both before and after totality. People come from far away to see these things, and central or eastern Oregon has about the best chance of clear skies available anywhere in August.
We'll arrive the day before, spend two nights, and leave the day after, and I hope even that gives us enough time built in for the delays that are certain. Madras is on 97, and that's pretty much a 2-lane road most of the way N or S. Just leave yourself a cushion of time, cuz you don't want to see a partial eclipse from the middle of a traffic jam!
