Auto Retract disable!

It's just a loop. They made it long enough to go into the harness so it doesn't fall on the ground and get lost when you unplug it. (Damn! I want to re-enable that windshield auto-retract. Where did I put that damn loop connector I removed 5 years ago??)
The brain of the windshield drive applies power to one side of that plug. If power returns on the other side (the loop) it retracts the windshield when the key is turned off. If the other side of the loop is dead (unplugged) it does nothing to the windshield height.

It's just a loop. There's nothing to cut, there's nothing to remove. Unplug it. Leave the connectors hanging. Put the bike back together and ride.

The connector that's left (not the loop, the other one) will have 12 volts on it when the key is on (or is it engine running? - I can't remember.) Anyway, that's a good place to get switched power to trigger a relay ofr fuse block for accessories. (Although an easier place to me is any of the blue wires going to the front running lights or the tail lights.)
Thanks for that! I want to use that power for my pdb and that's why I need the looped end to plug back into the receiver and the use the hot side of the connector? I will see if I can buy a similar connector and use the half I need for that use and then I won't have to cut anything!

I have removed the front cowl of my 08 but am unable to find the windshield disable switch? I would prefer not to remove the retract motor assembly only to find it isn't behind there either? Suggestions?Mark
Mark,

First off, DON'T CUT ANYTHING. In the photo of post #4 it clearly shows the two wire disconnect. Simply disconnect the plug and your auto-retract will be disabled. The windshield will go up & down just fine. Don't look for a loop, that is GEN 1. Don't pull on the harness, Don't cut anything. This is so simple.

If you want to use this disconnect as a source for 'Switched Power', simply purchase a .090 Sumitomo female connector and make your own pigtail. You can purchase this from EasternBeaver.com, part # 2P090K-SMHM. Or, purchase a used FJR side stand switch on eBay as it has the correct connector you need. Just leave the metal contacts inside the side stand switch connector. Cut off the actual side stand switch and toss it. Now you have the beginnings of a pigtail with the correct connector already connected to two wires. After you decide which side of your auto-retract connector is the hot side (details below) You then will need to splice/solder your new long run wire to this side stand switch wire. If you can't find a used side stand switch, a new Yamaha side stand switch is part # 5PX-82566-51.

To test to see which of the two wires in that auto-retract connector is hot when the key is on, do this: Turn the bike on, put the windshield all the way down, then check the voltage on both of the pins. One will be zero and one will be 12-14v. The pin indicating 12-14v is the one you want. The other pin will also read 12v if the windshield isn't all the way down or up.

When I did this to my '08A, while the windshield was all the way down, the black w/ red stripe wire had 12v, the red w/ black stripe had 0v. I made a one wire pigtail from a side stand switch wire & connector. Then I just clicked this new pigtail connector into my source windshield auto-retract connector (which made contact with the black w/ red stripe wire). Then I had switched power for my relay to my Soltek Fuego HID lights. Also, this farkle did away with that annoying windshield auto-retract, AND nothing was cut or mutalated in case I ever wanted to go back to stock. Simple plug & play.

Hope this helps

Thank you very much!! Just the info I need. I have determined the hot side of the connector and now with your info I can use the power source as the switch to my pdb! I will try a local auto electric source and if they can't help I will order online from EasterBeaver.com. I'm curious about where you are able to get parts numbers?

Mark,

Sounds like you have it correct now. If you order connectors form EasternBeaver.com, you will receive both male & female .090 connectors in the set that he (Jim) sells. He is located in Japan, but his shipping is pretty fast. If you go this route, it is best if you have a terminal crimper that is designed for this application. Jim at EasternBeaver.com sells them, it will be tool model number FRH-07.

Here is another option for you that might be easier for this one project of yours. Due to my health issues, I have my '09 FJR AE advertised for sale in this forum. So I won't be adding the auxiliary lighting to the bike as planned like I did to my '08A. In the course of collecting the necessary electronic items for this and future projects, I have the side stand switch pigtail that you would need. In fact, I have a used one from eBay and a new side stand switch that I purchased afterwards from RonAyers.com. The used one is fine, just a bit too dirty for my standards (the pitfalls of ordering blind on eBay). That is why I decided to buy a new side stand switch. I didn't really need it, I'm just anal. If you want the used one, I'll send it to you for free. If you want the new switch, then we can work out a cost. I paid RonAyers.com $47.?? total ($38.14 + $9.?? for shipping).

Let me know if you are interested. Send me a PM with your address and I'll send either to you and we can worry about payment later.

Don't look for a loop, that is GEN 1.
Just an FYI, it's also just a loop on the Gen II. A black wire that goes to both plugs in the connector.
I spoke with Mark about this, he was referring to the second from the top Gen 1 photo in :

https://www.fjr-tips.org/mods/shield/shield.html

With his '08, there is no need to dig deeper to find any type of 'loop' for his project. At first, that is what he was looking for. But he's on track now.

Thanks
