Autocom!

Wife want a com set. Been looking at Autocom Active-Plus kit. I don't need it to do everything like the Super Pro AVi, just be able to talk to her when she's on the back. So what's your opinion on this model, or any other model for that fact! Who has one?

Mine shipped today and should be here by the end of the week. Doesn't help much but they seem to have the best write up. I got it for the intercom and for long distance tunes. If someone can get hold of you on your cell, why ride? At the big show in Atlanta, they offered a show discount of 20 bucks. Got mine off eBay out of Canada for 20 less than that. Couldn't find a lower price on the web, but I'm sure someone will tell of one now that I bought it.

Not yet, but that's next on my list. My wife started riding her own bike last summer and I need a way to nag her with real-time, never-ending, pointless riding advice. Scares the shit out of me having her out there by herself and I don't feel like I can nag thoroughly enough with hand signals.

Pretty sure I'm going with Autocom. For some reason, my wife doesn't think we need anything. :glare:

I don't have a system yet, but I rode around at EOM with a couple who use the Autocom bike-to-bike. They seemed happy with it. I do remember them having some minor issues but I don't remember what they were. They had pretty expensive radios on theirs, mounted on the handlebars.

Did you also consider the Starcom? SportBike Effects sells them and gives a 15% discount to forum members.

I've been doing bike to bike for two summers now and really like it. The best feature is making decisions without having to pull off the road and shout at each other. Chating along the way has replaced the music. I would miss it now.

I use it bike to bike, works great. I picked up a pair of motorola's at Costco, you'll have to get autocom's adapter plug for this.

Couple of suggestions;

Get a boosteroo, helps immensely with the volume.

Consider custom molded ear plugs...

I have the older Autocom Pro-M1 already for I believe 6 years now.

It has travelled with me from bike to bike and is now build into my FJR.

I'm very happy with it, it does everything they claim.

But in my helmet I have replaced the older autocom speakers with Philips headphone speakers to get better

hifi sound quality. How the current Autocom speakers are I do not know.

The featuring of the Active-Plus seems to be the same or better than the old one I have, so I think you will be very happy with it.

I have and use Motorola 6500 radios with a throat mic. Setup works pretty good, no wind noise with the mic, but setup is only good for maybe a mile with those radios. Problem is you can't talk to passenger with radios that close. Was thinking Autocom would allow that while still being able to talk BTB. Tried Chatterbox and hated that. I'll go up to Daytona next week and check out the Autocom booth. Every time I go there I drop at least $500. lol

The boosteroo is a mini amp... Boost's sound levels. Plugs right into the autocom.

There's others on the market (mixit) etc... this is the one I've used for years...

I've always had an issue with the volume on the autocom, resolved that with custom

molded earplugs (https://www.bikes-n-spikes.org/acc/ear/ear.html).

BTW, you have to adjust your VOX with bike to bike, found out the hard way when I got

static at full volume! Take's some adjustment...

Some of the LD riders do bike to bike with CB's. Some others have radios, mostly kenwoods that I have seen. some have trouble hooking up the right frequency and channels though.

He is the master who will lead you to Autocom enlightenment, and cut you a good deal at the same time. He carries the complete line and all accessories to hook it up to whatever you want, as well as the expertise to guide you through the com system forest. He's tried a bunch more systems than I have, and won't hesitate to share his wealth of knowledge and experience, especially if you're looking to buy.

I have tried three different brands of com systems, due to issues with two previous ones, before I went with the Autocom. It has never caused me any grief whatsoever, which is a whole lot more than I can say for the two previous units. The connections are beefy and more glove-friendly than the others I've tried, and the Autocom has wire terminal sections coming out of the unit, as opposed to female din plugs like some others, which can be hard to keep things plugged into due to movement and vibration.

I give it two :good:

+1 on swapping out the speakers for some Hi-Fi units though. Even the FJR isn't perfect, but the Autocom comes damned close.

The only complaint I have with it is that you have to open the case up and use a small screwdriver to adjust the VOX trip. It takes a bit of stop-and-go tweaking, but I haven't thought much about it since I took the time to get it adjusted right.

I started out with the cheapest one (Motocom) I could find. When it broke, I bought the most expensive one (Softline) I could afford. After almost throwing that one into the ocean in a near fit of rage, I called Keith and ordered an Autocom.

Happily ever after.

I've been running the Autocom active 7 (I think- it was last years mid range system) for rider/passenger communication. I also use it daily on a 150 mile commute. I have my iPod and phone hooked up to it and never any problems. I have two settings I use, one for solo riding, and one for two up (small change is VOX settings) so I don't accidentally trigger the VOX when I'm talking to myself riding solo.

I have two nitpicks wiht the Autocom. 1) I use Entymotic ear plugs with mine. keeps out background noise and better fidelity with music and talking. the system to use earbuds is not very rider friendly. You still have all the wires in the helmet and it's a big box that's just not convenient to put anywhere. they should have a one peice "headset system" for earbud users. 2) I had a wire short out on the headset. One day the microphone just stopped working. turned out right where the flexible wires come out of the "hard" bundle, that it had just flexed too much there and with the daily use, finally gave up the ghost. I took it apart and resoldered it, so a bit of a pain but better than spending money on another headset that I wouldn't use 50% of it anyway.

other that that it's been a very good system. 100X better than the chatterboxes I used to try to make work.

one of these days i'll go with a bike to bike addition for the system but then i'll have to get another Autocom system as well. maybe time for an upgrade???

Active 7 Smart here. It kicks ass. Got my PDA phone connected, works like a champ. Also got bike to bike. Great volume. Great expandability, small packages, fits right in the tankbag easily.

My only issue has been the slightly short wiring between the microphone and the speaker bundle. On a rare occassion, the connector separates inside the helmet, and I lose my microphone. Easy to fix, and has only happened a coupla times, but otherwise it rocks.
