Avon Or Metz

Even if Metzlers were free, I wouldn't put one on my motorcycle. This isn't something I read on the internet. It happened to me. Front tread separation at speed. No warning. WHAM!! 80mph speed wobble. No air loss. Mine was a Z4, the link is about Z6's, same failure.

Metzler Z6 tread separations
That was what, 6 months ago? Haven't heard a peep about it since.

I'll take that risk thank you. I can walk away from a tire that causes an unstable wobble.

Avon should've done more research on this problem. A wobble at any speed, whether fast or slow, is no excuse.

Metzeler's tire "splitting" problem is history. The Z6's handling is just plain confidence inspiring.

And so how is a tread separation and speed wobble at 80mph OK??

My Z4 split, the link points to Z6's, Bernie in Aus found that the Sportec's were also splitting. That's THREE separate series of splitting Metzlers.

Yep, that would be confidence inspiring.

Not on my motorcycle.

FNG <_<

If I recall, up at the Sunnyside FJR gathering, there were 1 or 2 people who had separation on Z6's.

Also, as I said before, I have never seen such a weak sidewall on a motorcycle as I did on the Z6.

Well I for one have had NO problems with this model tire, unlike others.
Now dude, please don't take this personally, but a sample of 2 sets of Metz's does not really constitute a sample size we can draw conclusions from.

Avon makes a good tire. IMHO, the Z6 is better for the FJR. That's all.
I'm curious, have you rode the FJR with Avons? I haven't, I'm still on the stock ME4's. They seem OK. I'm just wondering if you rode with the Avons and had a bad experience that makes you prefer the Metz. Saying one is better than the other implies you've used both??

I've had Metz z4, m1 and next I'm trying out the z6.
I have Avon now and don't really care for them.  Have to pump up the front to 42-44 lbs to make my handle bars stop dancing when I let go of them to scratch myself.

With the Metz I always use the pressure recommended in the bikes manual.  I do more slow speed twisty road riding here in the Northeast.
Where are you scratching that requires two hands???? :haha: Never mind, I don't think I want to know. :puke:

Has anyone tried Shinkos on the FJR? I was at the dealer yesterday, mulling over little bikes and they just got in their first batch. $65 for the rear and $58 for the front. YIKES! Holy cheap! That's damn near half the cost of Avon's and at the rate we eat-up tires it might make sense to switch if the tire gives decent mileage and traction...

Anyone?

I think you should try them. :haha:

You're going to try Shrinkos! Ya' start out with 180/55-17 and after 200 miles, they are 160/50-15. No way. Not for me.

.Oh, you wrote Shinkos.

Sorry,

I've never been one to go for cheap on MC tires. For such a low price, one has to imagine that you give up something. I guess if someone rode like a granny all the time and never rode in the rain, maybe they could get by. I gotta admit, the price is attractive. Don't think I'll be the guinea pig tho- :beta:

Cheap labor does not necessarily translate into cheap products. Look at the changes in Hyundai. I'm just curious if someone's tried them. Aren't they running race tires in some series?

I wrote up a post on the shinko's I guess ya'll must of missed it. <_<

I have about 1500 miles on mine now, there a very high performance tire, I've put them to the test in the twistys, and on the highway! I love the way they handle.

I have to say there 100% improvement over the Bridgstones that came on the bike. One of the main things I noticed right off the bat was the ability to corner faster with little to no effort. I just barley put some weight on the bars and I'm leaned in, I can really RIP through the twistys now. there great.

V Rated Tires, any V Rated tire wont give you the tread life of a H rated for example, but it does give you the performance, I would say the Shinko Ravens are a perfect match for the FJR. (Because the FJR is a high performance bike it's going to be hard to find a tire that will give you long tread life.) You could go with a lower performing tire (lower speed rating) and your tires would last longer, however you would loose the high speed performance of a V rated tire!

I love mine, I'm happy with the Price, & the performance. B)

Highly recommend Shinko's :D

Thank you, Sir! I just may give 'em a whirl. These 'Vons are fading fast. I thought I'd get 10K out of 'em per others observations, but I might get 6 - 6.5k...

Do you think the Shinks'll give you 6k miles?

6K? The way i ride.......haha......yeah maybe, I'm sure it's possible, if i kept them on that long, at 1500 miles they show little wear, I'm sure 6k would not be to hard to achieve. If I get 5k I will be happy though. :D
