Avon Storm 2 Ultra Mileage

I've got about 2500 miles on my Storm 2 Ultra's... really like them.

I've got about a 2000 mile ride to Canada planned for September. I'm hoping I won't have to worry about them not getting me through. With rides in between, they'll be 5500 miles or so on them to get me home from that trip.

For reference, I got about 6800 miles on Bridgestone BT023GT's (best yet), about 4000 on the BT012 Stock Tires, and about 5000 miles out of a set of Michelin PR ONE's.

For anyone that's gone through the Storm 2 Ultras--did they last long? So far they look good. Thanks for any input.

I've run through several sets of the Storm II Ultras and I'm getting around 10,000 km (6000 miles) to a rear and 16,000km (10,000 miles) to a front. I find no difference in mileage between these and the first generation Storms.

For me, the Storm Ultra 2's average about 6000 miles on the Hayabusa, and close to 7000 miles on the FJR.

Avon Storm 2's, 4200 miles so far, and like you, they're looking good. Front is wearing smooth and even.

Measured the remaining rear tread depth; they look like they might go 8000 / 8500 miles at wear bars.

so to put your mind at ease, go to Sears or auto parts store and get a tread depth gauge, $5-10 cost,

see where you are on my chart of tire wear, depth measured in very center.

and BTW, son borrowed bike 2-up w/ GF and dragged pegs both sides in sweepers. Crazy youth...

message to me was Storm 2's grip fine.

Thanks for the responses. It's helpful to hear from those that used them up. I put another 400 miles on them this weekend, so I think they're close to 3000 now and they still are looking nice and round with good tread depth, so I'm getting over my worries.

BTW, tires are such an issue on this bike, I think it would be great to have a "tires" category on the forum.

I was at the local dealer two weeks ago getting the ground spider recall done, and a guy is in there waiting, who overhears me asking the service desk about my FJR. He says, "I owned a 2005 FJR and I loved that bike!! I put 50,000 miles on it in three years, but I just couldn't afford to keep buying tires for it, I'd only get about 4 - 5,000 miles out of the rears. Finally I sold it." He went on to say he bought a middleweight of some type that I can't remember. Anyway, it was good to hear that somebody else had worn out tires at the rate that I have! However, I did recently take advice from some members and upped the rear pressure to 44 psi and the Metzeler Z8 profile is still nice and round (no flat spot) at nearly 2k miles!!!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed and the pressures up!

I've also upped pressure from 40 on the back to 42 and it does appear to be helping the tire stay round. 44 seems really high, but if it's working for others, I guess it's OK.

UPDATE:

This last Storm II Ultra I only got 7000 kms on the rear and it was toast. It was unsafe to finish my SS ride. The piss-off is that I have done nothing different. Big disappointment.

Please tell me a km is longer than a mile! Although I've got around 4800kms on mine now and they are looking really good. Did they look good and then drop off at the end, or wear away evenly?

It looked okay at 5000 km but burnt past the wear indicators very quickly. I contacted AVON but no useful comments.

This photo is of my current rear Avon Storm 2 at 5700 miles; can easily see the harder rubber center strip.

2004 FJR model year - only about 300 miles of 2-up riding out of that 5700.

here's my Storm 2 rear @ 7100+ miles. Hard center strip is much in view.

I live on a dirt road, so I had wiped off the surface dust for the photo.

 

 

I had a PR2 rear (just prior tire) that I changed out at this same mileage, even though I figured it would make it to 8000.

My memory says that this Storm 2 rear is much less center flattened than the PR2 rear at this same mileage.

My set made it through my Canada trip no problem. I think I'm at about 6000 miles on them and will put another 1000 on this weekend. Getting me through the end of my season so I'm more than satisfied. Mine are still quite round also... I like this tire set.

Just about to mount the first set of the Storm 2 Ultras on an 04 with Ohlins. I think I'll try the higher pressures, and see if the traction/mileage on the goat roads seems any different. I always figured it was the gnarly surfaces I ride, chip-n-seal and potholed/patched backroads that wasted tires on my FJR.

I'm a tire killer, 5K miles is about the best front or rear, except the PR2's went to 7K but got greasy at the end...

I pulled off the Storm 2 Ultras--they still had some life in them, but the bike was all apart for some end-of-season service and the rear was getting down there.

Rear at just a little over 6000 miles:

Front

The rear was at the wear bar, and knowing spring will bring sandy roads I pulled them. It was flat spotted pretty good, and as others have mentioned there's a really pronounced center strip of hard rubber that appears. The front still looks pretty good and I'll keep it as a donor tire for stranded Canadians passing through next summer

Final impressions of the Storm 2 Ultras: Nice tire--mine went on w/o a lot of weight to balance. I bought these b/c Avon had a $50 rebate at the time making the price right. Handling is nice--all in all a really great set of tires for the FJR and the front is up to the heavy pig's weight--no weirdness on the front at all with wear or late-mileage handling.

However, I'm back to the Bridgestone BT 023GT's b/c they are about $50 less, and the mileage is very close (my last 023's were done at 6800 miles). The 023's also feel great on the bike. I'd call them a toss up if the price were the same.

I currently have 2200 miles on a rear Storm 2. It's wearing about the same as a RoadSmart = I expect 3500-4000 miles total.

For comparison, I wasted a PR2 in 4200 miles, and a ContiMotion in 1900 miles. It's all in the wrist, baby.

7000 KMS is 4.3495 Miles or 7000 x .62
