Glad they got out. That has to be one hell of a question for a trained pilot to ask themselves at that moment "Am I REALLY justified in punching out or should I try to save it?!" They know the cost of the aircraft and are surely "reminded" often. For some, pulling the handle means career over... ouch.

This is sweet, since I'm a major plane/space nut. Just for comparison, a B-2 bomber costs about 8% more than a Space Shuttle orbiter, so yeah, this has gotta suck.
Now there's a guy there with the dubious distinction of being the only person to prang a B-2. I notice they don't mention who was actually Pilot-in-Command.

I think the pilots are OK since they were so clearly screwed with nothing they could do. However, I do think there's some maintenance techs that are going to be on KP for the rest of their tour. This is like that F-117 crash at an airshow, where there was only 1 bolt out of 6 that needed to be installed to hold the wing spar together. And *I* have to ***** because my fvckin' dealership can't mount a tire right way on! I sure as hell ain't trusting them with the ABS or anything else complicated or safety-critical.
