Bag Rash!

As long as we have solved the bag rash problem, anyone have a recommendation for the stator cover rash? Sadly, I don't think the Bag Balm will work for a generator cover.
With carbon fiber in the $250 range I'm thinking that some paint from ColorRite (or equivalent) is a good way to go but it is still expensive with an 11 oz spray can >$30. If the stator rash is into the metal it's bondo time. A new cover is <$100 if money isn't an issue (which it may be right now). There is always the great Satan e-Bay.

I also suggest bondo on the stator cover and a medium/dark gray can of auto touchup paint from the local auto parts store. Find a matching car at the local mall and use it to match the paint color. Add it to the Bin-o-facts if its not already in there. Spray paint from Colorrite will require a clearcoat.

Good idea. Whoever comes up with a decent color match for the alternator cover, please post up on here.

My stator cover was rashed in the same off that got my left saddle bag. I purchased a new one (with gskt) from Parts Shark. Just checked - at least for a Gen I - cost is $103.00 plus shipping now.

There is a "how-to" on the Fjr Info site on how to replace the stator, which of course is exactly how you replace the stator cover. I was able to do it in about an hour. Hint - if you don't have an impact screwdriver, get one. You will need it to break the screws that attach the stator to the cover - those babies were LOADED with lock tite!

My stator cover is paint damage, and not into the metal. I might try to do a match and post it. It's been that way since I bought the bike. I figure the previous owner was a short skinny guy who couldn't hold up the bike. Of course I dropped it once just to make my own mark.

Well, I'm not short, nor am I skinny, and I can't hold that pig up either. When she gets it in her mind to take a nap, down is where she will go. ;)

When I first saw the title of this thread, "Bag Rash", I thought it was going to be discussion involving athletic supporters, jock itch and a variety of lotions, creams and powders. Glad I was mistaken.

Did mine without an Impact screwdriver after an event. Used a good quality allen key with an extension bar (ok, ok, shouldn't do that). Held the cover on a chair beside the bike to stop it turning. Didn't disconnect the stator wires. Described here.

And yet you couldn't resist clicking on the thread just to scratch that itch of curiosity, huh?

Hey I'm a sports fan and an athletic supporter.

Going to try the repair myself, with help from a friends son! I have a practice bag with some damage, for the left side of the bike, opposite to the one pictured above! So far I have removed the front from back the two black plates are sandwiched between the rubber seal and the outer plastic shell to strengthen the rivets hold. You can see the extra hole I accidentally drilled? More later!

Be sure you get the correct rivets; 5/32" diameter x 3/8" (medium) grip. Use double-sided tape to hold the plates in place while you "pop" the rivets. I stick a piece of thin wood (3/8" thick) between the inner and outer lid while I position the rivet plates (hold onto them with needle-nose pliers) - use the new rivets to line up the holes. Do NOT drop the plates with the sticky tape on them....

Thanks for that info! I didn't know about the plates till after I tried to drill out the remnants? I think I'm OK but rivet size is much appreciated!

Those are long grip rivets and they might work OK. If you make up the lid/hinge/plate sandwich and try to stick them in the hinge hole, they will probably hit the inner bag liner. As you pull up the mandrel slowly, the rivet compresses and should snug everything up tight. I see they are steel. The proper rivet is an aluminum body/steel mandrel. If they do not work and you cannot find some at your good local HW store (not Lowes or HD), send me a PM.
