Bags vs Key

So here I am, 3 hours from home, I had a great ride, I'm getting off the bike, putting my stuff in my bags, and locking the bags...

Next thing I know I'm cussing at the top of my lungs because my lock didn't turn but my key sure did!! My key bent like it was nothing more than a wire hanger.

I then spent the next 30 minutes trying to gently un-bend my key so I can start my ignition without mangling it any worse. Which engineer thought this system up? I have to turn off my bike to get into my bags?? This sucks for getting ready to ride - it also apparently sucks when the lock isn't "exactly" right and your aluminum foil key twists in a knot.

I will definitely pin my spare key to my underwear or something when I ride over night somewhere.

Any ideas? Or do I just need to lay off the 'roids when I'm locking that stupid bag?

Get a key made from a steel blank and hide it on the bike.

What Grumpy said. See the FAQ section or whatever they call it now, it has key blank info listed. I always keep a spare key in my underwear... :lol:
 
Time to add another to the already pissed-off 17,394,567 FORMER FJR owners who sold/burned/drowned/blew-up/destroyed/traded/kicked their bike because you have to use a g0)@*#ed key to unlock the bag!!!

Whoever the hell thought that putting locking storage on a motorcycle was a good idea should be drawn and quartered, then jimmy-kicked. <_<

Here's a serious reply (for a change): Get a second (or third or 4th) key made and attach the two ignition keys together with one of the these quick release keychains:

It'll cost you less than $2. Then when you want to open a bag, you can leave the bike running, and you'll always have a spare key should you go Schwarzenegger on one again. :rolleyes:

 
too late to help probably but when I picked my bike up from D&H they advised to hold down the luggage "flap" when locking or unlocking to reduce stress on the key. Same thing on the gas cap. Whenever turning the key, other than ignition, hold the locking mechanism down before turning the key. It really does help reduce the strain on the key.

That's what I do, no one told me, just made sense.

I like having one key that locks the bags. I never need to "keep the bike running" while off the bike going through them looking for something. (I know how hard it must be to start the bike again)

The big advantage to me is the bags are always locked, so one less thing to deal with when walking away from your ride. I guess they should not have locks on them at all, that way someone can open them and steal your **** when you are not there....but you can get into them yourelf 3 seconds quicker.

I have yet to bend my key, so I would say it is opperator error here, nothing wrong with the system.

Then again if you've been a member(and read a few posts ) this should be a non issue..

Granted it's a fookin' stupid idea to have use the same key to do this,... we've been doin' it with car doors for how long? Look at your keys for it.........

Lets face it: keys suck. But crooks suck worse-er

I actually have one worn out key that allows me to remove the key from a bag or the ignition in either locked or unlocked position. I don't know how to make it happen I just happen to have one.

Never had an issue w/ my key. And, I like my locking bags.

My bike had 4 spare keys when I bought it I assumed this was the reason. I now keep 2 spares back at the house one of the extras in my ICON vest pocket for the bags and then on the ignition key ring I keep on bike key and one key for my Givi topcase.

This way I can unlock my bags when the bike is running or put them on the bike.

My morning routine consists of getting all my work gear together in the two saddle bags pulling the bike over from the shed and while it's warming up get my riding gear on and lock the bags to the bike.

In the evening when I get home I pull up to the porch pull of the bags and leave them on the porch while I shed the bike up for the night. Then start all over again.

 
Absolutely critical that the bags can be locked, otherwise you'd just buy soft luggage.

I too have never found it a "big deal" re-start the bike, but I guess it an issue for some :unsure:

What I've seen one enterprising FJR owner (bob-st) do is:

1. he got a couple of spares made

2. chopped off the key ring part and glued a small radio style knob to the remaining stub

3. this way whenever he's "with" the bike he keeps one of these stubby keys in each bag lock, so he can simply turn the knob to unlock/lock the bags

4. yet can quickly and easily pull them out for when he needs to walk away from the bike.

5. the stubby keys with the knobs have a very low profile so there is no chance of catching them with you boot or gear.

This is a cheap, quick, simple and very cleaver solution IMHO.
