Greetings....

posted this elsewhere and heard crickets...

so, maybe here?

Have a 2010.

love it

no mods yet except for Two Brothers slip ons.

Keep reading about the Barbarian mod and how easy it is and how it smooths this/tunes that... etc...

My question is this:

What are the Pros and Cons of this mod on a 2010??

I'm not unhappy... amazing machine. but i'm open to suggestions why i should or should not do this...

I intend to get at least 300K miles out of this machine, so if theres any adverse side effects of the mod, probably won't do it...

thanks!

Expect a multitude of answers/opinions on this --

About two years ago, I performed the Barbarian mod on my 04. Took all the CO #s up 7 as suggested elsewhere on the forum. Didn't notice a damn bit of difference. I wanted to detect an improvement...just didn't. Took the settings up another 7, totaling an increase of 14 over "stock". Still didn't notice anything. Dropped all the numbers down to 0. Yep, still didn't notice anything.

I can only guess one of two things was happening.....either other forum member's butt-dynos were infinitely more sensitive than mine....or I was lucky and my 04 FJR had perfect fueling.

Put all the numbers back to their original settings, and STILL didn't notice ANY smoothness/performance change in the bike.

I'm thinking that since the change really only affects CO emissions, and by fractions of a percent at that, the "real world" adjustment is too imperceptible to notice. But others will tell you the Barbarian mod made their bikes run cooler, faster, better gas mileage, gets them laid, keeps the bank balance in the "black" and makes okra NOT slimy.

YMMV

I would agree with Howie. Also I've read that it only effect it at idle, once you get above idle the O2 sensor takes over. The only real way to change the fuel curve is with a PC (power commander) or similar.

one of the many opinions.

good to know... ...others will tell you the Barbarian mod made their bikes run cooler, faster, better gas mileage, gets them laid, keeps the bank balance in the "black" and makes okra NOT slimy... several good reasons listed! :)

The Barbarian Mod is an attempt to mimic the results of a Power Commander. Reports indicate that some FJR owners have had some success - I did not.

After several attempts to get it right, I finally bought a PC3, which does help smooth out the throttle control & vibrations. It's still a 1300cc bike, and still makes heat.

Good point, Chris.

I wonder... has anyone ever tried playing with the CO settings after disconnecting the O2 sensor? No Power commander added, just disco the O2 and then fiddle with the CO settings. Hmmm...

G2 pro/con -- this is excerpted from a PM that I sent to another Forumite a little while ago about the same question:

What do you want to cure with the G2 tube? The G2 was originally designed for the '06 and '07 models specifically. During these two model years the throttle pulley between the throttle bodies was not round but more egg shape. The point of the egg shape really came into play around 3k-5k rpm. The result was that the throttle tube movement to the throttle pulley movement was no longer 1:1, the throttle pulley would turn faster than the throttle tube was turned causing unwanted and excess throttle increase making throttle control very difficult. No one knows what possessed Yamaha to do this. The G2 throttle tube and throttle cable ramp is made to the exact mirror image of the throttle pulley so that when the throttle cable went over the tip of the egg, the G2 cable ramp had a dip in it that canceled out the extra movement. This returned the throttle grip to throttle body pulley back to 1:1.
If you put the G2 throttle tube on a Gen I or any Gen II from '08 and up you get the opposite results since the throttle body pulley is round. On a Gen I with a G2, as you turn the throttle into the 3k rpm area the throttle cable starts to go into the dip of the throttle cable ramp so that you have to turn the throttle more to get the same rpm increase. This means that you will have to apply more roll on to get normal engine speed increase. In sort of a back-handed way this would give you better throttle control in the normal driving range but may well induce wrist fatigue pretty quickly.

G2 is correct in saying that the throttle tube will physically fit FJRs from 2003 and up, they omitted saying that the throttle tube is intended specifically for the '06 & '07 years to cure a very specific issue.

^^^^^Gospel, baby!

ps: I wonder if Yamaha introduced a problem in 06 & 07 by accident...by NOT rejecting bad throttle pulleys from their supplier.

Can't believe it was actually engineered that way.....or that an engineer EVER drove an unmodified 06 or 07 and still signed-off on it.

not sure all the info got through... i understand the G2 throttle on various bikes, this was a questions about the Barbian "JUmper" mod on a Generation 2 (2010) sorry if i confused you. :)

Pros? Easy to perform.

Cons? Added +7 to each cylinder, didn't notice any change. Eventually backed it out, still didn't notice any difference.

Ionbeam was referring to your topic title "Barbarian Jumper Mod G2 Pros/Cons???"

I assumed the same thing he did, that you were asking about BOTH the Barbarian Jumper mod AND the G2 Throttle tube.

I now assume you weren't???

Us oldhimers saw G2 and thought he meant G2. We got left behind when the new guys short hand Gen II to be G2. Why should there have been any confusion? ;)

Ditto for me.

C'mon you old timers... Better start loading up on the Ginkgo Biloba.

I figured out that by "G2" he actually meant "Gen 2" in the first post when he never once talked about the throttle tube, and talked only about "this mod" (in the singular). :graduated:

So back to my (on point) question:

Has anyone tried disconnecting the O2 sensor and then playing with the CO settings?

Sorry, Fred. A G2 is a throttle tube for 06 an 07 FJRs. A Gen II is a pathetic attempt by a Japanese manufacturer to extend the life of a particular product. Us "oldhimers" lack your understanding of current Uber-kEwL Forum lingo. :p

Oh....I haven't attempted the 02 sensor trick you suggest. Anyone else got an answer?
