Best flashlight?

I could have sworn we discussed this once but I searched and didn't find it.

I'm preping for the annual xmas list for the wifey

What's the best flashlight? As in bang for the buck, brightness and runtime.

I have a decent LED flashlight, some off brand (coast I think) but runtime with is is shit, and it eats very expensive batteries. I noticed the newer versions use standard AAA batteries which I assume don't last as long, but are easier to find.

I've looked at the Surefires, they are damn expensive, bit I know they are brighter than shiznit. I have a pilot buddy that carries one, it's small, compact and will light up the tail of the plane he inspects (he lit up the top of a 40 foot tree and I was amazed). Still he said it eats batteries, but he gets them for free from his job with the air force so he doesn't care. I tend to think that 60 minutes of run time isn't enough. But my expectations may be out of line.

Try looking at www.brightguys, and see the "Bright Star" Responder series. I like the 3C and 4AA models.

I've always liked the Maglites. Weatherproof, bright, gobs of sizes from single AA to 5D, adjustable lens.

The only one I ever destroyed is one I ran over with the car, crushed the tube just enough to make it where I couldn't get the batteries out. It still worked until the batteries died, though.

Rider magazine did an excellent comparo on flashlights a couple of years ago, might be worth looking up if you are serious about getting the right light. If I wasn't stupid enough to toss it ...

CRKT makes nice knives, too. I have one a bit smaller than your link that my father in law got me a few years back. I have to plug Benchmade now because they've been one of my wife's clients the last couple years. www.benchmade.com

If you can swing the expense, they are worth their weight in gold. Compact size and tremendous output. They do offer LED versions, which are better on battery life, and rechargeable options, too. There is one that is a LED/incandecent hybrid (A2 aviator), but $$$. My weapon light was a surefire as well as my hand held while deployed to Iraq. Worth every penny, but this is just my .02...

Last week I worked a a govmnt facillity. I could tell ya, but then I'ld have to kill ya. Escorted around and all that.

The brass eyelets on my boots set the thing off.

The Irony is I carried a machete into the place, no problems as a "tool"

Oh, and if there is an anthrax scare, I had nuttin to do with it B)

Personally, I like Gerber knives and flashlights. But maybe that's cuz my friend works there and I get them for really cheap! Seriously though, I have a Gerber LED flashlight that is quite impressive for battery life and brightness.

I have a Streamlight Stinger at work, and it's plenty bright.

I like my Crux. Good on light output, battery life, and easy on the wallet. They also carry cheap batteries.

My Battalion Chief's son has a light that he's dropped twice down long elevator shafts (he's a tech) without it quitting. I'll try to remember to ask him what it is next time I see him.

I'd be curious to hear what brand that is, not that I plan on entering any elevator shafts anytime soon.
