Hey Carver. Do you go to the Mac forums to get advice on motorcycles?
I haven't sipped the Apple Kool-aid (or is it Apple Juice?) but as others have mentioned, stay away from AV suites. Easiest way to turn a well-functioning machine into a dog. Sort of like putting a car tire on a MC. (Just kidding - I did that and it wasn't too bad).
Advantage of going to this Forum is that (most) of its inhabitants are not computer geeks, so you don't get derided for asking basic questions (like "what oil should I use?"). You'd get the same dog-pile on a computer forum.

And, once you've drunk the Apple Juice, you won't want any other taste.

Oh, yes, ClamXav Sentry for me, as recommended by my personal IT Geek. Free, not intrusive, just seems to get on with the job. Mind you, I've not tested it much, I'm fairly careful about what I open or download.

Many Mac forums are populated with a lot of people who are still under the misunderstanding that no AV is needed. I know people who don't run AV on Mac or PC and claim their diligence is what protects them. I know many more who I wouldn't trust to be so restrained.

The Mac's continued growth while PC sales stagnate (12% growth last year while PCs growth was -6%) has moved it past the point of "security through obscurity".

But the up shot is that asking on a Mac forum might not get dog piled but might get outdated recommendations to not run anything.
