I'm going to be traveling to Marlinton WV from Canada this summer and would like some advice on the best way to get there. I'd be heading down I-79 through Pittsburgh. Mapquest says to take I-79 to US 33 east in to Elkins then south on US 219 to Marlinton. Just by looking at a map (and having ridden US 219), I'd say that staying on I-79 till I got to US 19 (just south of Sutton), then take 39 east to US 219 and north into Marlinton would make more sense.

I'm going to be driving a pick-up truck (not riding my bike) so I'm after the quickest (time wise), easiest (straight line like) way. Not most twisty and fun.

I'm trailering a sport bike and the fun will start once I get to Marlinton. I figure if I asked you guys then I'd get better info that Mapquest will offer up.

If you want to stick to 4 lane highways I think YOUR route as opposed to mapquest would be better.

If you don't mind hauling a trailer on 2 lane country roads through the mountains 219 isn't too bad, but you would make better time on the major routes.

I was wondering if US 39 would be a better road to make time on than US 219. I know it's a tad shorter. Hills and corners are another thing.

I did the entire length of 219 from just south of Rochester to Lewisburg (and then on 219 S to Princeton for my tires...).

Nice ride, but its not the way to go if you want to make time. We pulled out of Bradford PA at 8am and pulled into Lewisburg around 6:30 - with a 1hr stop for lunch near Deep Creek MA. Still, better than slabbing it!

I know...but in this case I'd rather be slabbing it. Just trying to get down to the good stuff so I can enjoy it all. It's going to be approx. 12 hrs on the road as it is.

You may wish to take 19S all the way to Summersville and then go east. Watch out as you go through Summersville because its a speed trap.

Make sure to take time to go up to Green Bank (radio observatory) and Cass (Old steam locomotive) if you have time.

That's the route I was talking about in my first post.

I've been through this area several times in the past and made it to the attractions you mentioned before. The other trips through this area were rushed and part of my yearly pilgrimage to Deal's Gap.

This time I've picked up a copy of the West Virginia Rider's Guide by Mario Caruso and am taking more time in the area. Apparently I've missed some excellent stuff. I'm going to concentrate on West Virginia instead of trying to squeeze it in with North Carolina in one trip.

Thanks for your input and help.

Do 19S to 39.

Just remember, it is WV...there is no escape from the mountains.

Might want to check EOM site for the past 2 years for some suggested routes, maps and GPS downloads.

I've been down through this area 4 times in the last year..3 times on bikes. I'd recommend I-79, 33East to Elkins and down 219 since you're after the quickest time
