As the topic suggest, Rothlisberger, the quarterback for the Pittsburg Steelers, was in a motorcylcle accident. He was conscious at arrival but no other details are available this morning.

(Damn, beat me to the post by 3 mins)

Pittsburgh Steeler starting QB hurt in Motorcycle accident.

Aren't helmet's required in PA? Sounds like this guy rides helmet-less all the time from the news story. Don't cops ticket helmetless riders in helmet required states?

No helmets are now optional in that state. I wish I learned how to provide links and info. Oh well maybe illiterate for life.

stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid..... I don't know what else to say other than I hope he's ok.

This blows me away.

Sounds to me like the woman turned in front of him and caused the accident. (Why wasn't she ticketed?) That's what wrong with this situation, not the fact that he chose to not wear a helmet.

The media would do the same thing here in Louisiana when we had no helmet law. A biker could be killed by some cager's stupidity, and all they'd write about was whether he had a helmet on or not.

Jeez.

Maybe she was in the intersection turning, and Ben went though trying to beat the light. Or maybe she was already well into the turn, and he didn't see her? Or, as you say, maybe she turned right in front of him. We don't know. I will say that from what I read, it sounded more like the former.

Stats. show if you ride without a helmet you stand a 50% chance of death or a severe head injury. Reality is that a lot of accidents are caused by cars pulling out in front of motorcycles. You know if he would have been wearing a helmet he would have come out of this crash in much better shape. Just being on a motorcycle in general increases your chance of survival in a bad crash. It completly amazes me of the # of people willing to put their head out in harms way. Just look at Gary Busey, he was an advocate for the no helmet law until he cracked his noggin on the sidewalk, now he is lucky he can remember his own name.

No doubt about it. Helmets save lives. If people wanna ride without em, that's their choice and I really don't have any reason to second guess them about it. Certainly not gonna call em idiots because I make different choices.

Doesn't change the fact that the major issue (for me, at least), in situations where cars cause bikes to wreck, is not whether the rider was wearing a helmet. I've been knocked off twice in T-bones and, in neither case, did the driver of the car get a ticket. Nor was it noted that, in one case, the woman was on her cell phone. It was written on the accident report that I was wearing a helmet. WTF?

Last thing. Carry the "most safe situation" logic forward. More dangerous to ride a bike than to be in a car. I'm sure stats show it. I enjoy riding my bike. Don't appreciate being judged by cagers about it. Some like to ride without helmets. No skin off my nose.

Sad to see somebody go down.

I'm an *****...I'll tell you that right off the bat...but, not because I don't wear a helmet. It's a choice. We still have that here in texas....a choice. Just wanted to post here because I am not sure what the four other "big ben bites the dust" threads are doing.

Actually that helps you or your insurance company in the event you sue the cager with the cell phone. Defense can't argue that you contributed to the extent of your own injuries by not wearing gear if an officer is going to testify that you were wearing it. It's like noting that the injured passengers in a victim's car were wearing seat belts.

It's hard to understand that big ben would risk life and noggin by not wearing a helmet,no matter if the accident wasn't his fault,it's his fault that he suffered the injuries for being a bonehead without a helmet.

Steeler's officals should come down on his butt hard.Does anyone know what kind of sport bike that was?

Looks like one of those new high powered kawi 1400.Maybe he should stick to a cruiser and the steelers should put a clause in his contract that when on a motorized open vehicle he must at least wear his football helmet.I wouldn't rag on this guy so much but it's hard to have sympathy for someone that doedn't wear a HELMET!!!!!!!!

Hey, trim...I don't wear a helmet....shoot me.

Oh, by the way...just imagine what would have happened to his head if he was wearing a helmet.

hey odot,I don't need to shoot you, you've already shot yourself bud,you just don't know it yet.

But that's your choice and that's what makes this america. We've all got choices to make and the right to make those choices and everyone has their opinions.

someone explain to me how some moron cager turning into a bike's path has ANYTHING to do with helmets....and further, how wearing a DOT approved half or 3/4 helmet would have prevented facial and jaw injuries in this case??

If you safety advocates out there want to do some good, stop harping on helmets and push lawmakers to get rough on people who won't/can't drive their vehicles without intruding into someone else's space.

I personally hope he sues the living crap out of her and her insurance company.

Easy, if he had been wearing a full face helmet, he'd most likely not received the gash in his head, broken nose, and broken jaw.... what's confusing about that?
