Thank you all for your well wishes, I'm proud to be a member of this community and hope someday return the favor (but hopefully not under the same circumstance.

Update on me...final tally is 6 back ribs broken and 5 front ribs cracked, lung and liver contusion. Yeah, I did quite a number on myself :yahoo: . Doc thinks I'll be here at least till Friday, they won't release me until I can 1) survive on oral pain meds (on IV now) and 2)breath deeply enough to get enough oxygen into my lungs.

I haven't had a chance to thoroughly inspect the bike yet, but as I recall all the damage is on the right side; mirror, hardbag, slider (looked like it did it's job), rider footpeg.

The plan for the day was to ride from Ely, where I spent the previous night, to Redding, CA via Winnemucca and Klamath Falls. The 2820 said the fastest route was via Hwy40. The 478 said a few showers but otherwise clear. So apparently the 478 either doesn't display snow, or I don't have it set up correctly. Will have to look into this. Anyway I picked up Hwy40 at Denio, NV and headed west. It was snowing very lightly, not enough to stick. Made it down that huge 8% Doherty Grade and figured I was in the clear to at least Lakeview. Well, it started snowing harder, but still not sticking to the road so I pressed on. About 15 miles outside Lakeview the road was covered with snow. But I wasn't going to backtrack the 100 something miles to Denio. I wsa going maybe 25-30mph when the bike slid...it went left first then down on its right side and landed in a nice fluffy snow embankment. I took the full force of my dismount on my right rear lat. Lay there for awhile making sure my limbs still worked, then got up, walked about 50' downroad to activate SPOT911 (which worked great btw, they called my wife and sent the sherrif. I'll be carrying the SPOT on my person from now on0. By then a couple of passersby had stopped to help. We righted the bike but it wouldn't crank. Called a tow truck and got a ride to the hospital from one of the families that stopped.

Doc says 6-8 weeks to heal, which is still enough time to make the IBR start, but am bummed I won't be getting much riding in until June. Oh well, I'll get REALLY good at routing ;) . Besides I've been riding all winter a have a couple of 4day-4k rides under my belt so not too worried about that.

Speial thanks to Beemerdon and FJRay, who is on his way to pick up the bike. Then I'll have a shipping company haul it home to Chandler and go from there.

gunny to everything, man this forum rocks! :clapping: :friends: :thumbsupsmileyanim:

I broke 5 of my own ribs in a skiing accident about 6 years ago now. I was in the hospital just one night, although they were originally thinking 2-3 days. Took about 5-6 weeks to be 80-90% healed...sounds like your injuries are a bit more severe so might take a little longer. Assuming they give you narcotic pain meds (I hope they would in this case!), remember to wean yourself off of them when you're ready to come off. My doctor didn't tell me anything, so I just stopped cold turkey...withdrawals suck. I learned something interesting during all that though...narcotic withdrawals don't carry any risk of fatality, but alcohol withdrawals are potentially fatal. By the time I realized I was going through withdrawals, I decided to just keep suffering through it, as opposed to taking some more meds (oxycontin and oxycodone in my case) which may help in the short term, but I'd be back to withdrawals several hours later.

Anywho...all that to say I hope you heal well and heal quickly! Hope to see you at in Toas again this year!

Bravo

made my day

now that everyone's in such a good and generous mood...

how about loaning me $1000 with no guarantee of payback ???

:yahoo:

I'm proud to be a member of this community...

so am I big time

sounds like a high side which is much more violent than a low side

I wish you had landed on a nice pillow of fluffy snow, dude!

to activate SPOT911

makes me consider SPOT more actively...just curious, did you have cell service there, not that it's better than SPOT in an emergency

but it wouldn't crank

hay gang, could this merely be the tip over sensor, or does that just kill the engine while on it's side and reset when upright for immediate start

any idea what the issue is with not cranking after the bike goes down with no apparent damage to the engine

what I'm reading is the engine wouldn't turn over at all, no movement by the starter

not just "wouldn't fire up"

<enquiring minds want to know!!!>

got a ride to the hospital from one of the families that stopped.

great to know there still are caring, generous, & kind strangers out there

That's a good point. It crossed my mind as well, but I obviously forgot about it by the time I made my post (what was I saying again)?

It may be as simple as flipping the red switch off then back on.

Glad to see you have the help needed. I hope you heal quick Good2go. Can someone post a link to the FJR Assist sign up?

I would like to be listed in case anyone in this area needs it. You guys out west always answer the call and take action. Great action on your part guys! :clapping:

Yeah, there was cell service; that's how one guy called for a tow. I activated spot because it was the first thing that went through my mind. The service worked as advertised; they notified my emergency contact and had LE on the scene within an hour.

Hoping the no-crank was just the kickstand switch. FJRay picked up the bike and will give it a once over to know for sure.

I just talked to Greg and I am on the way to pick up the bike. Raod Run :yahoo:

Good Job Ray...you are the Good Samaritan. :clapping:

Have fun on your Raod Run. :)

Kudos to all who help their fellow FJR rider in distress...
Ditto!! This gives me alot of comfort to know that there will be help available if I need it.

If you pick up the bike (more or less vertical) and turn the ignition key off and then back on, the tip over sensor resets and allows a restart.

Yeah, yeah, yeah -- ask me how I know.

Good on ya, Ray. (Not a surprise to anyone who knows him, BTW.)

Wow, I'm floored by the immediate mobilization by the forum members here. One of the great things about motorcycle riding is the bikers watch out for one another and this forum certainly embodies that spirit!

Good2Go, I'd like to add my voice to the chorus of others wishing you a speedy recovery. I'm glad to hear you're on the road to a full recovery and will be back on the bike before the end of spring!

I'll be adding my name to the assistance list as well - great idea!

I just got back with the bike and backed the whole mess in the shop until tomorow. It's rashed pretty good on the right side but didn't see anything structural. Lots of little stuff but it seems totaly fixable.

Greg was in pretty good spirits when I stopped in to get the keys. He said that when he can leave the hospital his wife is going to collect him and take him home.

When I tried to start it,It cranked but the batt seemed low so I just pushed it on the trailer. I wil make it run in the morning and make sure it's OK.

I hope he gets it ready for the IBR.

Just caught this.. Nice work Ray! :clapping:

Another reason this place is a cut above other forums. I have a copy of the assistance list in the glovebox of my bike. Granted I'm never more than a block from home, It's reassuring to know I can call somebody to help if I get lost.

Remind my to sponsor you next time the Goat fukers Hall of Fame is inducting new members Ray!

I SAW YOU!! It was about 20 miles or so east of Elko, near the Halleck exit. I was headed the other way in the G-ride (NHP Charger). So sorry your trip ended this way, but glad A) that it wasn't worse, and B) that fine folks are taking care of you. Here's wishing a speedy recovery for you AND the bike.

Way to go Ray. I can't think of a better place for a bike to be under the conditions. Wish I was closer to be of assistance, but the new address doesn't lend itself to recovery work in that area. How about a little gas money to your PayPal? Let me know if that works and I'll fire off some $$.
