Went to get on and go for a big ride today but had sadness. I switched on the ignition, all lights and such came on fine, hit the starter and after ever so brief sound that the bike was going to fire, no start. I crank, and crank, and crank (3-5 second pulses with the starter) until the battery starts to go flat and gave up. This is an 07 with 13K on the odo that has not had the ignition switch recall done. Lights, gauges and everything looks fine, the starter cranks but will not fire?? From what I have read about the ignition switch failure these are not the symptoms. Sidestand switch failure would not let the bike crank, same with the clutch switch... right? Any thoughts?

No code on the gauges. Do I need to do something to see it or does it show on its own?

well, I'm probably not much help, but ya need fuel, spark, and air

it's got gas...good gas (not months old)...can ya smell gas

air - air cleaner serviced at some time

nothing plugging up the exhaust pipe(s)

no touch of the throttle while starting

plugs been changed once in the 13k miles (stock plugs change every 8k miles I believe)

(go with Iridiums)

paging RadioHowie, paging RadioHowie, please answer the white courtesy phone

To check for fault codes you need to be in the diagnostic mode.

Usually an out of the blue no start condition is caused by flooding. With a fully charged battery, what typically works is to hold the throttle wide open and crank the engine in short 3-5 second bursts.

Is there anything you can think of that may have been out of the ordinary recently? Had you just filled up with gas (possible contamination). Have you fiddled with ANYTHING between the last time it ran and now? Hey, gotta ask these questions, sometimes we get surprising answers.

Your assessment of the ignition switch and various other interlocks is correct, if the engine spins it is supposed to start.

Ok, so I checked the Bin-O-Facts and ran the Diag codes. At d1:61 the history code listed was 32 which from doing a search is O2 Sensor. d1:62 showed 01 which I am guessing means that there was only one fault code.

How long has it been since you rode it? As Ionbeam said, if it's been a while, twist it wide open, and crank it in short bursts. Worked for mine.

YEAH! The WOT trick worked! Cranked for a bit and she started to pop. Cranked a few more times alternating throttle open and closed and got fire! Had to scrub the in-state SS1K I had planned for today but a shorter ride will be in order. Thanks guys for your suggestions!

Not if the second set of ignition switch contacts are open, at least on my 05 Gen I anyway.
