Admins feel free to move this somewhere else as needed.

My brother rides a Goldwing and his lady friend a small Cruiser (and new rider).

They have been riding together 7 months, some of which has been winter in Boston so no riding. They have lost each other three times already (I asked him if she was really that much faster).

He wants bike to bike communications relatively cheaply priced. I suggested Chatterbox or Scala. The problem is:

"I guess I should have mentioned we already have the J & M headsets in the helmets that I do not want to replace. I guess I'm looking for a cb unit that would attach to her bike and connect to the existing speakers."

Any tech or knowledgeable people have suggestions for him?

Hey Mike, you didn't tell me you had a brother in Beantown. I love to go to Boston but I sure wouldn't live there. So when you headin this way?

Dave

It seems you already answered your own question: contact J&M for suggestions on adding CB to cruiser.

The headsets are generally the cheapest part of the system.

Sounds sorta like my daughter shopping for a brand new car to match the red mats & such from her old 2000 Focus beater.

He's a "conservative spender"

Unless it is pondering having his trailer color matched to his Goldwing.

I suggested that and emailed a pdf file of their catalogue, as well as Scala systems and Chatterbox for @ $250 on the street.

He doesn't want to fool around with the speakers installed in the helmet and such; and he doesn't want to spend even bigger bucks to complete the J&M system.

Checkswrecks, I think you have it nailed:

Bike-to-bike and rider-to-passenger communications is definately one area where you get what you pay for.

Cheap in gets you cheap out, if you get my drift.

With that said, the absolute threshold for acceptable b2b at the lowest possible cost, IMO, would be

Motocomm headsets with FRS radios. This setup runs less than 100.00 per rider/bike.

I have used these for a few years now, and while sound quality isn't stellar it does keep everyone "connected".

I agree with SKL50. garbage in = garbage out. The whole point of him getting a b to b system is so that he can stay in contact with his wife. Tell her to take exit 25, you need gas or lunch, I have a flat tire, do you want to stop at the worlds largest hairball etc etc. If you can't hear whats being said or the range is only good for line of sight, then whats the point? Otherwise the conversation might go something like this:

"I need to stop for gas"

"But i don't want to pass. You drive first"

"I don't have a thirst. My bike needs gas"

"First bike to pass? What? Speak up!"

"If we don't stop I'm going to run out of gas!"

"We'll see who runs over whose ***! By the way I need gas."

"Why do want to pass?"

etc etc ad infinitum.

J&m makes an adapter that fits their headsets and a midland 85-722(? is that the right # ?). They sell a kit with a handlebar bag and the radio. I use this set up on my sport bike and have decent range. Handi talkie range mind you. The adapter was about 50 bucks IIRC.

Considering this for my wife and I myself for this upcoming season. Key word being; rather cheaply...

I am going to give the small walkie talkies a try with headsets and boom mic. They have pretty good range in hills and valleys, at least for a couple miles. Their small and have multiple channels. I am thinking of wiring with a one earpiece and mic headset. I read a thread where there exist a connector that has priority plugins...still putting it all together.

The way I figure, since I already have the communicators, just need that switchee thingy and boom mic headset and good to go....yeah right?
