Some potential donors, who don't qualify to donate whole blood, may be able to donate platelets. It's less traumatic for your body but takes a little longer. The downside is that you have a catheter into each arm, one to take the whole blood out and the other to return the blood minus the platelets. Check with your doctor for what's best for you.

The mad cow revelation does open the door to potential insights.

My place here in Tarzana is close the Kaiser Woodland Hills facility if anyone needs a nearby place to stay.

I had my last appointment with Canadian Blood Services 2 weeks ago. Some of you may recall I donated "for Tyler" back in the summer. My number comes up again first of March - that one will be for TD.

Wishing you the best, TD.

ps - in our OR, we have the capability to 'recycle' a patient's own blood in those surgeries where significant blood loss is anticipated. The suctioned blood is 'washed' and 'spun' and the red cells are transfused back into the patient. Perhaps this will be available to TD as well.

Sending best wishes to Turbo Dave.

I'm scheduled for whole blood donation tomorrow (from SC; unfortuneately that's not Southern California) but even if you are not a direct donation for Dave, donating to your local Red Cross or Blood Bank helps indirectly by easing the Nationwide shortage that we see seasonally.

Well, ****.

I've never met TD, but I hope his procedure goes well.

There's no way I'll be able to make it to SoKal to donate, so I'm just gonna have to do it from Ohio. As luck has it, there's a blood dive at work on January 29.

And, as double-luck has it, Mrs. BG and I work for the same company in the same building, so we're both gonna donate on the 29th! :yahoo:

I may not win a mileage contest, but perhaps I can get a few of the ~ 3500 coworkers in the building to help out and donate...

Great cause! One of the things I love about the FJR family. If I was anywhere near the left coast it would be a no brainer. Best wishes for you TD. This thread has put a fire under my butt to start donating regularly again. You never know when you or a loved one may need it too.

Good Luck to you Dave. Sounds like a fairly serious procedure you're having done, got all my fingers and toes crossed for you, think I've covered all the gods. Let me know if I need to sacrifice any chickens, sheep and goats...........well we need to talk to Bust about those.

I did talk with the director of collections at the local Red Cross about getting TD credit for blood collected, to complicated to many agencies involved just doesn't work.

I am riding down Sunday, staying at near by Best Western for a Monday morning 9 am blood donation in Woodland hills.

I'll keep you in my prayers, Turbo Dave. Regretably, I can't make a trip south to donate blood. But I did just sign up to donate blood when the blood mobile stops by my work on February 3rd. I've got a gallon pin laying around somewhere, but haven't given in a while. Time to get back with the program! :clapping:

Damn Dave, I'd ride out and give you a quart if my blood was worth a crap.. Redirecting any excess Karma your way- Chooser

Boy, I've gotten more information about donating blood today than I knew there was! First of all, the simplest way to donate "for" Turbo Dave is to go to one of the four centers Beeroux listed. By far. Elsewhere, it becomes incredibly complex. They don't do the credits like they used to, and they don't ship the actual blood from one point to another at all, except in dire emergencies.

So rather than tell you all HOW complex it is (and how expensive even--for the donor), I'll just say this: If you CAN go to one of the four SoCal Kaiser centers, good on ya, it'll help make sure there's enough supply on hand for Dave, and everybody else they serve. If you can't make it down there to donate, donate wherever you are. Think of Turbo Dave when you do. Or think of anything you like. He wouldn't be getting YOUR blood anyway, most likely, but somebody will, and that's what matters.

Beeroux, if you tossed in one a them Turbo Dave thong jobs, I bet you'd double the response. And if it was one that Dave had actually worn . . .

Thanks Georgie for looking out for that old rascal. You're a great friend. I received an emergency transfusion years ago, I know the importance. I also have an appointment on Friday morning to donate locally. Also put my name on the Bone Marrow Donor list and will send the cheek cell sample in when the kit arrives. Marrow is a slightly bigger deal than blood, but still a very small sacrifice compared to what the person who needs it experiences.

Don't forget about the hug, kiss and possible RA you promised to give him for me ;)

To one and all,

this has been pretty awesome let me tell ya.

Thanks to everyone for donating, or just for sending good vibes to Turbo.

He is appreciative and honored to know you all.

So am I.

Thanks again and again and again again.
