Thanks for the followup. Having done what you went through, I bet the winds/gusts exceeded 60mph for them to affect you like that. Last time I had that experience is when I was riding a CB350 Honda through the Rocky Mtn. passes... it was not fun and takes a great deal of effort to keep your line.

 
One trick I learned from some old rider many years ago, when you are riding in a cross-wind it helps to point your knee out into the wind.
Would that hold true with fully-faired machines as well?
Just my theory, but I think poking your knee into the wind does two things, it grabs a little bit of air if your knee is exposed to the wind, and it forces you to change your balance on the bike so you can react a little quicker to unexpected gusts.

I thought perhaps they were trying to give the bike less of blunt profile and allowing air to more easily pass through the bike.
